i was replacing my window motor yesterday, and i had been greasing the track with lithium grease. my speaker had been crackling for some time, but the paper looked ok. well i thought maybe it is just dry and sprayed the grease on it and around the outer portion where the paper ends. this was on the backside of the speaker, i didnt spray a lot of grease just enough to moisten it. i got it all back together and it sounded good, no more crackling. i dont think this will last long but i am surprised it worked.

The crackling usually comes from a torn cone. The weight of the grease may be keeping the tear from rattling so much but... it will come back.
