I just came into ownership of a 95 tbi small block out of a half ton pickup. I took it to a machine shop to get some estimates on all the general rebuild stuff. The guy at the shop told me to trash it and get an older one... He said the tranny bolt pattern on the block was different the oiling system was different, no carb intake would work, and the pistons were different.??????? Is he right seriously? I made sure he wasnt talking about a 1pc rear main seal instead of the actual bolting of the tranny to the block but he wasnt. I made sure he knew it wasnt an lt1 and he knew sooo... Is this guy just an idiot or is all this stuff true??? I thought i knew quite a bit about the sbc's but when you hear all that from a machinest it makes you wonder...

So my question is "is there something different about the 95 (or any year around there) small blocks that makes them un-desirable?" or is this guy full of it like i think he is?

Hes full of it, the bolt pattern on the transmission hasn't changed since ever. The LSX motors just don't use one bolt that the older stuff used.

Everyone sells carb intakes to work with the older heads and the new heads (different bolt pattern on the intake) no problem.

There was a problem with the newer blocks having really thin cylinder walls so boring it out is all but impossible.

I figured he probably was. and i even made sure he wasnt talking bout the 87+ or 86- bolt angle deal nd he wasnt... hard to believe a machinest is that stupid... like i always thought a small block is a small block is a small block.

Thanks

He obviously stopped reading after 1987 and he definitely doesnt use the net, hes a moron. Your block is fine, just take it to another machinist that has some common sense. The heads are the only difference on that motor and the one piece rear with a different flywheel bolt pattern, you can put whatever heads and intake you want on it though, a sbc is an sbc!!

yea theres definately no way he's workin on anything of mine ever. one neat thing i did look up was the casting number off the block. just to get a little more info. the casting number is 10243880 which the sticky on this forum says "10243880...350...95-00...2 or 4...Vortec truck, Gen.I crate motors and "ZZ4", roller cam, one piece rear seal"

only thing is this wasnt a vortec motor... nor does it have a roller cam or roller lifters in it. so maybe the truck was an end of the year 95 and they used some vortec blocks for the old 350's?? any way, looks like its a good block if its the casting they use for the zz4...

It says its a roller because they used the same blocks for the roller and non-roller motors, starting in 87 all sbcs had provisions for a roller cam but most truck motors didnt get the roller cam til 96.
