Wife took the G8 in for oil change at the dealership and afterwards the mechanic asked her how to reset the check oil message (that pops up after the car is started). I read the manual and followed the directions and there is no "check oil " message when the car is in the on/run position, but when I start it up the message pops up and won't go away.:bang:

Change oil and check oil are two different things.

These things take like 9 quarts or something. Make sure he put enough in there.

You turn the key on and pump the gas pedal three times if I remember to turn off the CHANGE oil message.

If you go into engineering mode you can make sure the olms has reset, i think it is hold the left thumbwheel down while turning the key to on and it is in that menu.

 Checked the oil level and its LOW. VERY LOW!!! We're taking the car back to the dealership within the next hour. They will have some explainin to do. This is the reason we use dealerships, we've been screwed over at express lubes and would rather trust a certified mechanic, but recently GM just seems to comming up with more reasons to ruin its rep.

I bet the mechanic thought 6.0 6 qts it's happened to a couple of others.
I'd light a fire under someones ass for that rookie mistake

Running it that low wont really hurt anything unless you went road racing right after it, but most people dont realize they take so much oil.

These days 'real' mechanics at dealers dont change oil much anymore unless they were doing something else on the car. Either way anyone who changes the oil and doesnt look at the dipstick when they are done shouldnt be working on other people's cars IMO.

The verdict was a improperly installed oil filter. The car was running 3.5 quarts low. I made sure we got a doc. showing they made a mistake just in case. . . :judge: Now I know the difference between the "change oil" and "check oil" message. (thanks KP)

Do you guys think running that low for like 2 weeks could have done any damage?? Might have got on it a couple times but never raced and didn't notice if it was running hot.

If you lose oil pressure I'm pretty sure it will instantly go into limp mode, I doubt you hurt anything.
