Small Block & Big Block Chevy Specific - Hwo to read codeson OBD 1

I'm working on my brothers 91 RS and it's shooting at least one code and i've been told i can read the codes with out a scanner.

So my question is how is this done and what the procedure if there is more than one code.. thanks
