i have a gto ls2 in my 68 camaro and installed a 180 amp alternator. Before i start it up is there anything i should put on the alternator to protect the rest of the engine electrical system?

I'm not sure what you mean by that??
The alternator will still only put out the specified voltage, that being around 14V. Its voltage that can ruin electrical components, not amperage. As long as the alternator is functioning properly, it won't ruin anything.

Just make sure you got a nice big wire going from the alt to the batt.
