Do you have some sort of reasoning for taking the A/C off?
95Kyle
10-08-2009, 03:52 PM
no reason? its all from a donor car.. it was empty when i bought the car.. and wondered if it even still worked so rather not install it. bc if i do install it and then its broke or wont hold freon then ill be mad bc ill have to rip it out again... what kinda horsepower gains...?? how much horsepower...
there is minimal power gains by removing AC.
You can remove the belt if you want, it runs a second belt on the 98-02 f-cars ls1.
Personally, I would install the system, do a vacuum test to see if it will hold vacuum, and then replace the drier and charge the system. working AC is very nice to have.

i would keep it. its nice for hot sunny days. i like to cruise with the windows down and ac on. then race all out drag cars and beat them. they get mad when you tell them you still have ac. lol

No power gains, the PCM shuts off the compressor at high RPM so no power is robbed.

it's worth deleting for weight savings if you want every little bit for the track. it doesn't rob any significant amount of power otherwise and is nice to have....
that being said, i cut mine out. I wanted a clean, no frills engine bay without all the clutter, same reason i deleted the power steering. when my hood opens, you'll see a LSX 454 and that's about it :D Then again, it's a half-ass show car and not a DD, plus i can handle manual steering and no AC so i don't mind.

If you get rid of the AC, can I have it? I regret getting rid of mine. In the rain, everything fogs up and i feel like i'm in a sauna. In the winter, I have no heat other than the headers.
In the summer, I can't get to work without smelling like BO and being drenched in sweat. I can't take my GF on a date in the car because we'd both melt before we got to where we were going.
Going on a cruise isn't much fun, love the windows down, but sometimes it's nice to have ice forming on your skin while listening to some tunes and taking it easy. Everywhere I go I get to breathe the nice smog, burning coolant, and oil from every beaters exhaust, but hey, I can't roll my windows up in 108* heat....
Unless it's a track car, or your AC is non-functional and you REALLY can't fix it. Just keep it, you'll be doing yourself a favor, I promise.

LOL, lemme tell ya man, after I got the vette with AC i've been spoiled. I gotta get AC back in my firebird. About the V6 system though, I believe there are some differences, I can't remember what off the top of my head, but I want to say the V6 AC won't work with the LS1. So that may push you in the direction of AC delete just a tad bit.
Manning up and ditching AC is a bit drastic. In that scenario, why not man up and go straight headers, it saves weight. Leave out the power steering, that saves a bit of weight and HP too. You could even hollow out the front and rear bumpers, chop out any interior panels, unless they are used for support...
I like to enjoy the car in every situation and passengers don't always look past the no AC thing because we have a big motor. My firebird has never had AC and I've driven it daily for 3 years. It does get old though :bang:

I cant give you an exact number...but the compressor is pretty dang heavy...and of course you lose a little more with the rest of the parts...If you dont use it, I would certainly take it out...:judge:

took mine off... and front sway bar...and the front bumper.. with an slp lid, and magnaflow exhaust I ran a 13.0 @ 108 with a 1.9 60 ft... I think the ac part of it helped ALOT stock it ran 13.8... after removing the ac and catback I was running 13.1 13.2s.... Also If im not going drive it in the rain, why would I drive it in 100 degree weather? Only take it out when its nice, t tops off, perfect.

is that really true? that alone would make me keep the ac.
you take off AC and have a 13 second racecar, I'll agree with caveman. There are 9 second, true "daily drivers" around here that impress me, cold AC, sits and idles in traffic with good street manners, and a system with a subwoofer.
if it is broken, that's one thing, but to remove a good system, for weight savings at that power level is nothing that I would do. But im going to get into my lsx daily driver to go to work. Current weather status is:
78 degrees
97% humidity
30.07 baro
77 degree dew point
Certainly not fun weather to drive a car without AC, even just to remove the humidity.

what nobody has seemed to mention yet is that with the ac out of the way it opens up some nice room to work under the hood. i personally never used it and i like to do my own work so pulling it was a no-brainer for me

My compressor started screeching so I pulled the system. I'm good, but I'd have never done it if I realized how much bitching my girlfriend would do as she's having heat strokes in the passenger seat.
pulling the whole hvac system including heater box clears up a lot of room, the normal ac is not that much in the way.
