Ok So I am thinking about the military. I am 18. Having a hard time finding a job and always thought about doing this. I heard Obama got rid of the sign on bonus? this true? also what benefits do you get now? what branch do you prefer? I am thinking Navy or army right now. any info is helpful.

LOL, Obama got rid of the sign on bonus? Haha, no that is total B.S., but hilarious nonetheless. I don't know about the other branches, but the Reserves are at max strength and don't need the sign on bonuses as incentives for people to join anymore. Granted, depending on your MOS, you could still probably get a bonus, but don't let that be the reason you join the military.

I absolutely love the military. I'm Army and my brother is Air Force, and the benefits we have are great. I'll be working on my Masters degree before I have to worry about paying for school again, and right now all I do is go to school, and don't even have to work. The Army (GI Bill) has all of my bills covered. After my Gi Bill is used up, I have the Texas Hazelwood Act which pays for 150 credits to any Texas University I want, from a community college to UT or A&M.

If you take to heart some of the lessons the military teaches you, you will be able to achieve more than anything the military will ever be able to pay for.

Depends on the job you want in the military, some of those have bonus's attached to them. Talk to a recruiter but take your dad or someone with you. I'm in the Air Force and so far it's been a great decision for me. Just get info from all of the branches and then make a educated decision. Be prepared to deploy b/c that's just a fact of life now.

dont just join up becuase you cant find a job right now. you need to make a whole hearted decision before you sign the papers. USMC "U Signed the Mutherfkking Contract" you'll be in it for at least 4 years, there's no quieting if you dont like it. The benifits are nice but like said before, everyone MOS is different on if you get sign on bonuses. I didnt get any but my freind (same MOS) did.... guess i wasnt one of the lucky ones.

I think deciding on a branch first is backwards. Figure out what kind of job you want, then find which branches offer that job, then pick the one that fit you.

If all you want to do is turn wrenches or something, pick the branch with the best quality of life. Pretty pointless to join the Marines or the Army if you're doing a job the Air Force or Navy offer with a way higher quality of life.

As far as benefits, they are all DoD wide, so any branch offers the same thing. Free college while you are serving, GI bill after you get out, free health care for you and your family, etc...

Bonuses are job dependent and you're only going to get one for joining under-manned/dangerous jobs. I don't think the Navy is offering bonuses for much other than SEALs/EOD/Nuclear jobs. The Army offers a lot of different jobs a bonus, but you aren't going to get the big 40k one unless you go Ranger or something like that, see what I'm getting at?

Good advise for anyone right there. Dad or Mom being there will cut out 98% of recruiter bull****.

Not unless they know something about the military or have experience with it. Just because they are an adult doesnt mean they know the truth. Get someone with experience with the military, friends, aunts, w/e. Like everyones said decide what you want to do and go from there. You get the signing bounes depending on your job avalibitiy. If your gonna be a grunt, dont expect much. If your gonna do signals analysis more likely. The better you do on your asvab the more jobs open to you. If your a dumbass dont expect a great job with a big bonus. And like someone said if you think your not getting deployed think again lol good luck

The better you do on your asvab the more jobs open to you.

This is very true. Go to a bookstore and pick up a study guide. After you've read it and taken the ASVAB you can begin to ask what jobs are available to you. Keep in mind that just because a job requires a higher score doesn't make it more desirable (eg. a crew chief on fighter aircraft doesn't require the same score that a linguist does, but the job was more fun to me). However there are opportunities that a recruiter won't tell you about, such as the "street to seat" program that allows you to join the Army with a direct flight school slot as a Warrant Officer. In this case the recruiter doesn't earn the enlistment credit until you graduate school, and they aren't in the job long enough to see that day, so they won't help you here.

Key is, keep asking questions of those who have recently served or are currently serving. Narrow down what you think you would like to do, and then figure out what branch of service offers it.

**Don't forget about the National Guard and Air National Guard! Many great opportunities and job training.

I spent 10 years in the Army and this is what I recommended to my Son. If you don't want to be deployed then go into the Air Force or Coast Guard. Both of these are good choices.......Air Force barracks/housing was better for enlisted guys then what I had as an Officer. You don't rank as fast here, but everything is relative. Air Force and Coast Guard are considered non-combat, so the only deployments are voluntary. The other branches WILL deploy you.........

With the unlimited deployments the Army and Marines have going now I can't recommend either of these branches. Although i had good experiences in the Army, things have changed and recommend all to look closely at their options prior to jumping into anything.

There are a number of positions in the Air Force...any branches for that matter that are highly sought after when you leave the military. I work for a consulting firm where we specialize in putting people to work. I would be happy to work with anyone that has taken their asvab and is considering work options. Remember something....just because it looks sexy in writing may not be when you get into the actual environment. Get feedback from others that have been there before making a committment.

The asvab practice test is a great idea.....this really is a primary tool the Military reviews in order to place you. Take it seriously.......Good Luck!

Make sure you have current information before posting about the other services. I'm Air Force and deployed in a combat zone (not Al Udied or somewhere in the safe-zone). These days there are very few Air Force jobs (if any actually) that don't deploy. However, our deployments do tend to be shorter, 4-6 months at a time, but you will be going back. As for the Coast Guard, I've seen them pounding the ground out here too and I've seen them in other countries doing various things as well. They also deploy although I don't know about how many of them or what jobs as I'm not Coast Guard so I won't make false claims about them.

Don't go Air Force if you don't want to deploy. For that matter, you probably shouldn't join the military if you want to stay state-side. All services deploy now. ALL services are COMBAT services last time I checked.

Yeah, pretty much bottom line, like everyone's said, if you join, you WILL deploy. No 2 ways about it. I spent 4 years in the Marines and now I'm in the Nat'l Guard. Night and day difference. I miss the Corps, but the Guard has more education benefits (we get both state and federal benefits). That being said, I was in the guard less than 6 months before I got activated. All that being said, I love the military. I will retire from the military wether it's the reserves or active I haven't decided. It's not for everyone though. If you have a problem with authority, it's probably not a good idea for you. But if you want to go places you've never been, and do things most people have never done, it's the only way to go.

LMFAO! I want some of what you are smoking.

All branches will deploy you, if you are too much of a pussy to deploy (NOT directed at you 02txceta), the only way to avoid it is to NOT JOIN THE MILITARY

I was just told by a buddy that does prior-service recruiting that MOST roles in the Air Force and Coast Guard were non-deployable.

No offense taken.....I spent more time than most in shitty locations, and just feel for the current Men and Women that have to go back repeatedly. Used to be that once you served 24 months in a combat/overseas environment that you could exempt from any further orders. Nowadays not the case........

Definitely meant no jab to Air Force or anyone else saying non-combat, but typically Coast Guard will not deploy unless volunteering, or in a MP type enforcement role. Air Force has troops in combat units, but again the majority aren't active combatants.

That's true, Security Forces, TACP, and CCT are about the only guys actively going out and getting into fights, but the rest of the Air Force is still deploying, and deploying a lot. I don't think any job is non deployable, but there are definitely a lot of guys that might only deploy once in this whole decade long war. There are others who are on their 6-7th trip (like the above 3 jobs).

The AF times just had an article about some jobs going to 12 months deployed, 6 months at home until this shit is over
