Hello All,
I live in Yorba Linda which is 20 minutes directly west of Doug Thorley Headers in Corona. While I would offer up my car for the full mock up work, my car is leased and I do not plan on keeping it (in fact, I can't wait to turn it back in next May!) so I would not be one of the 30. In looking at other Thorley headers for other more popular (and that is the key word here-- "popular") LSx applications, IMO I can't see a pair for our cars coming in for less than $800 because of the limited LS4 market.
In all honesty, I think the more appropriate question for the group might be, "At what price point are you not interested in headers?" How many of you that don't plan on installing a good cam or keeping the car for the long term would be willing to spend almost a grand on a 10-15 HP gain?
That said, if it would help, I would be willing to offer DTH my car so they can put it on a rack and get a better look at what they're up against, or perhaps take some measurements, photos or what have you. Let me know via PM and we can exchange phone numbers if need be.

Will the headers be ceramic coated at this price?

Also, how far down will these headers go? Will they include the downpipe to the catback like most of the other Wbody headers?

Glad to see something good finally happening for these cars. One thing you guys need to realize is that for that price i would assume they are mild steel headers (if i'm wrong then you guys should be reported for robbing the guy :) ). Wow 25 people, impressive. All the other times people have tried to get headers made everyone bitches out and doesn't want to put the money out up front. Nice to see people are actually putting their money where there mouths are for once. There could have been headers a long time ago if people actually followed through with their constant header complaints. Good luck getting your 30 and I look forward to seeing how they turn out.

Of course you are... but you missed my point; what I said was your power gains should be just about the same as everyone else in here- speaking of the mods you already have that are listed in your sig. I was saying the people who would get the real 'crazy gains' you mentioned would be those with major airflow mods- ie H/C/I.
Im watching this unfold just to see if they will collect into a single downpipe or will be tubed? making TRUE dual
It would be cool if they did a setup like the pacesetter headers for the 3800 W-bodys, where both banks come down in individual tubes, then collect into a single outlet pipe with a Y at the end. That way they could make it bolt up to the stock catback and such, but it would also be easy to run true duals if someone wanted to.
Another question about the headers- has there any talk about sizes yet (ie primary, crossover, and outlet)?

Just saying they might need the room to make a proper collector. Getting into a box with the design to make it easily bolt up with the stock system isn't a good idea. Just need to find a place for the o2. Could even use a wiring extension and put it near the front bank.

Guys,
I spoke with Nick T. (the R&D guy at Thorley Headers) today-- as it so happens, we both live just 10 minutes from each other on opposite ends of the same city. Due to our respective schedules, Nick and I have set up a time where I will drop off my vehicle at his home next Monday night 10/26 around 6PM-ish or so, then he will drive the car to their shop the following morning. I will then pick it up from him afterward, because...
...Nick & Co first need to look the vehicle over to see if what we're after is even possible. If it looks good, I will take the vehicle back to him AFTER the SEMA show which runs from November 1st through the 7th, as Nick and his crew are scheduled to be in Las Vegas for that. If the visual evaluation goes well, Nick anticipated about two weeks worth of work on the outside on my car. As an aside, in my correspondence with Nick he is very enthusiastic about the project; in fact, he sounded relieved when I called to tell him I could provide a "backup car" if he was still interested, and he very much was!
To answer a previous question, we have had no technical discussions whatsoever with regard to primary sizes or anything of that nature, nor would I anticipate that unless we have something viable in the works and they can pull it off.
'Till next time,
Morgan Hayden

I just retrieved my car from Nick at Thorley and wanted to provide a preliminary report:
Nick drove the car today to their shop...from what he tells me, the general reaction from "the crew" was along the lines of, "Umm...what's so special about this car?" Then he pulled the hood release. "OOOOhhhhh...." :)
The car spent the day with the hood open. The initial evaluation is that the project is not impossible, but it will require quite a bit of work due to the lack of room. Ideally the goal is to run two downpipes into a single merged collector underneath, with the front following a similar path the OEM crossover has now. I will be returning the car to Nick the Monday following the SEMA show.
Until next time,
Morgan

neilownz
10-28-2009, 10:35 AM
Doubt it. Just might need a second flex joint and a little more pipe, but shouldn't be any real complex bends. I would guess a slip joint before the cat would be easiest since the some people might want to pass inspections. Wouldn't kill me if it bolted to the cat back though. They will need to put some sort of connection in there to install it. Maybe a ball and socket in between the front+crossover and the rear+downpipe...

At this point it's all conjecture until they take my car apart. They are contemplating two sizes of primaries, but at this point their main focus is getting ready for SEMA in Las Vegas as they are leaving tomorrow to go set up. I met up with Nick and his dad last night, and I have basically given Nick an open time frame with my car so they don't have to feel like they're rushed.

1-5/8 will be enough for just a 5.3. I think you lose back pressure or something if you go bigger (1-3/4 or 1-7/8) with the smaller v8s. Might not be bad since it will be y'd down to a single 3 rather quickly.

As far as military techs go.. Im a Vehicle Operator in the AF, bascially I drive anything that has wheels, an military techs bandaide our shit back together so I know how to feel, but in there defense they get no funding to fix shit correctly.

Isn't today the day ??? Hopefully all goes well !!!:thumb:
I talked to Nick at doug thorleys today, he said he just came back from SEMA, but they said they will be working on the car very soon, and still thinking about runing 2 downpipes.....he said it will be a tough job to do.

I hope he is opptimistic about getting positive results. I hope with 2 downpipes it won't be that difficult to join into my Magnaflow catback. I wonder how dificult it would be to convert the mf into a dual exhaust.

If we had a much more aggressive cam, then okay, but as it stands....meh. I'd love to try a 218/224 at 112 LSA in this motor. Again, plans call for a merged collector off of two DPs, but room is a factor.
I was thinking about this over the weekend...how many of the 30-odd or so of you that have gotten on board with this project are heavily modded (meaning cam, heads, intake and/or a combination thereof) OR will go that route if headers come to pass? I know there's one out there that is already pretty radical.

I think more people will want to after the factory warranty expires and the used ones get less expensive. Making it easier for people to know what is worth the money is the hard part. Putting 5 grand into a vehicle that's worth 10 isn't practical for some people.

The only things I'm missing are ported heads and a cam, which I would only do with headers. This will give me the opportunity to do so down the road. my goal from day one has been a 12 second, 325-375 whp 4 door dd. Hopefully this will pave the way.
I'll probably break more crap before then, though (I still need to work on the tune and figure out where my missing HP has gone--nothing to do with the tune though.)

hopfully these headers will make a cam swap worth it, thats pretty much all i will be missing after this.

they will, however the stock intake (even ported) is going to be a big restriction as well.

my intake is out for stage 2 porting as we speak. so ya there is more planned in the future. RR's, tune, beefed up tranny and to top it off an inferno hood....

Any updates?
Are they going to produce these or are these just going to be a one off thing?
