I have an '02 Z06. It's actually easier from the bottom if you have a two post lift. because the entire front/rear suspension/torque tube/motor will drop down as one piece.
I have a 4 post lift so I took it out the top. Even if you take it out the top you still have to jack up the rear end, unbolt the rear cradle and pull the tranny/diff/torque tube out enough to free the motor. With that in mind, think about what's behind the car when you start this project. If you decide to pull everything straight back be sure you have enough room behind the car to do it.
You nearly have to drop the motor in with the back of the motor pointing nearly straight down and gently bring the rear up as you lower it into place. I pulled the motor out without the heads and I put the motor in with heads and crank pulley on. Once the motor gets close, it will hang up on the oil pan and some guys will loosen or remove the front cradle to get it to fit. I just got underneath and pushed up on the rear of the block as a buddy lowered it and the block went into place.

Bottom, if you have the proper equipment. Saves from bending over the fenders puttting the engine back together!

If you have access to a 2 post lift it is definitely easier to drop everything out the bottom. I've done mine 2 times and use 2 ATV/motorcycle jacks to set the front and rear cradles on and just disconnect everything and lift the body and frame off of the entire driveline. Here are a few pics:

Hope this helps.

Pulling the motor was a time when a 2-post lift would have been worth its weight in gold! I don't have one and ended up pulling it out the top. It was easier for me to drop the front cradle completely out of the way rather than drop the rear end.

With both F-Bodys and Vette, its far easier to drop it out the bottom, with the cradle and all. All of the wiring comes with it. Its so nice, then your right there to strip the motor.
