Pontiac GTO 2004-2006 - I know nothing; lots of questions....

Hello!

I do not own a GTO, yet. I am looking at a 2004 with around 75K. It is a 6M with black ext. red int. I have only seen pictures thus far, but looks stock.

-What problems are these cars known for?
-What are the chances I will find a completely stock one? Pros & cons of stock GTO.
-What motor oil and tires come standard from the factory?
-I have read something about a gear skip delete; what is this?
-Will I regret not waiting to find a good '05-'06 in regards to the extra horsepower and torque?
-What are the explicit benefits between the LS1 and LS2?
-How long does the stock clutch typically last? What brand is it?

Obviously, there is no way to know how hard the ~75K miles have been thus far, especially without seeing it in person. Is there anything specific to this vehicle I should check for before making the purchase?

How much would you think is a fair offer for such a vehicle? I know the NADA, TMV, and KBB values. I didn't know if they were correct with the real world prices.

Thanks in advance!

2004 was known for faulty door lock actuators. Check the top of the rear seat to make sure the thread is not failing. If you hear the rear end whining, that's not a good sign.

Clutches tend to go out fairly quick with hard usage. Replace with a Monster clutch.

Still plenty of bone stock cars out there. Watch out for signs it was demodded prior to the sale.

05/06 used Mobile 1 oil from the factory. Think the 04 had regular dino oil. Stock tires if it has 17" wheels which should be BF Goodrich 245/45/17.

At low RPM, the car will force you to go from 1st to 4th or something stupid like that to save gas. You can get that tuned out or buy a little device to eliminate it.

I used to tell people not to worry about the 5.7 vs. 6.0 of the 05/06, but now with the L92 heads available, it might be worth waiting for the 05/06. The later years had better brakes too.

You can score some pretty sweet deals right now. I picked my 06 m6 with 17k miles up from a gm dealer under their certified program for $18.9.

Around $13K

Walk away. You can get 30k mile mint condition 1 owner 6spd bone stock clean as hell 2004 GTOs for $13,000. They are everywhere, but you gotta look in the right places. Can't just check autotrader or walk down to the local dealer and expect them to have a deal like that.

Craigslist will be your best bet. Also watch eBay for completed auctions with cars that did not sell.

bought my 04goat in 05 with 1,938 miles for $20,000. the 04 had a recall on all of the front & rear bushings. the gas caps also had a recall. other than that there isnt much that goes wrong.
