Got to run the new 2010 Magnacharged Camaro SS against my 1998 Trans Am WS6 over the weekend. Got some good footage.
Both cars are recently built, so no track numbers on either car...

I was a bit concerned about being able to hang, but it turned out to be all in the traction. Drag radials are going on the SS this week. Will probably be a whole nuther ballgame then. Plus, my TA is a lot lighter, so weight was a factor there...

You're right, the LS1 still has great cred!! Close shifts keep that TA in the powerband; shifting at about 66-6700 and only dropping back to 5800. That baby stays in the zone!

Gotta love folks who hate on the car that got the kill. Heads are Dart Pro1 stage 3 heads. I dunno the cam lift or duration; it was in the car when I got it. Apparently it is a small one though...Car was dynoed on a warm humid day, so prolly lost 2 or 3 HP due to that ;)

I don't think he was hating. It's just that not everyone knows that every H/C LS1 isn't going to put down 450rwhp or more. It depends on the combo.

I hear ya. I was actually thinking it was a bit low myself when we finished the build, but I'm super satisfied! It's freakin fast! I think it also depends on the dyno too. It was on a Dynojet dyno, not a mustang pull. That typically renders lower numbers. There's a dyno guy in town who's known for crazy high numbers; I should take it over there and see what it puts down HAHA!!

500+ pounds lighter is equivelant to 50+rwhp! And your gears really helped, too. Nice kill and nicely edited video!

Sounds about right for a LS1 build. ?? My experience with ported 243 heads, Fast intake, etc. on a LS1 GTO nets 420rwhp with a 238/242 duration cam. Granted ported 243 heads arent THE BEST, but not many are flowing better.

GTO's are independent suspension in the rear so that has to take away some power. It all depends on your set up but most HCI cars I see get about 440whp.

Yeah, it was all in the weight difference, and traction of course. 2nd person did add to the weight as well. Head to head it was close.

Heads are Dart Pro1 stage 3 heads. I dunno the cam lift or duration; it was in the car when I got it. Apparently it is a small one though
The numbers don't really suprise me. I haven't heard many good things about the Dart heads and the cam is an unknown. That being said, it looks like you have a stout setup there! Great build video!

If they were gonna make it so heavy they should at least have given it four doors and a trunk that you could get a suit case into. At least I can justify the weight on my family cruiser.

Camaro camera is a digital camera - Sony Cybershot DSC-H1
The dash cam in the TA is an Epic Stealthcam. It's just a tiny cam you can mount anywhere. Quality is marginal, but it frees up your hands for things like rowin the gears ;)

Nice video. The 413hp some are bashing,it's all in the set up of parts. My ls1 started at 370hp with h&c,(low power)then I ended up with 463hp 414tq from my h&c set up before I went with a 402ci. Nice video, and that camaro is a fat girl. I have no clue why gm keeps making the cars so heavy. Now,why did the camaro seem to hold in the 3rd run got got smoked bad in the other two?

The 3rd run was from a higher roll so the SS hooked and caught traction. The first two just got loose since they were from such a slow roll. The DR's on my TA just hooked and launched each time....

Where did you get that from? 500lbs in weight reduction is worth a hell of
a lot more than 50rwhp. 50hp is nothing really. That's damned near half
a second off your ET for a 10 second car. 50rwhp isn't going to do that.

if they raced to something like 140 or so ( if thy had the room) it might have looked like a different race. something like a 60-160 run would have erased at least some of the traction issues either car might have had. either way it was a great vid and that TA sounded great.

I don't really see why everyone is so surprised by the results.
On stock tires with 492rwhp that camaro had no hope of traction at 15mph. On top of this in the first two runs the OP clearly steals the hit (you can't even hear the 3rd honk over his car).
The third run was much better, it sounded like he was ready for you that time and he hooked up. I think with no passenger the camaro would edge you out above 100.
Not trying to bash you OP, you have a very nice car and it looks like you can drive it pretty well. Thanks for posting the vid.

its the rule of 100. if you do a roll on race you go at a speed and the it isnt done until someone hits the end speed.... or they pull serious buss lengths.
this helps to cure alot of issues with racing without a tree.
1) a minor jump can be excused because if you cant make it up over the span of 100mph and possibly 2 gear changes then it isnt gonna happen.
2) traction issues
3) big turbo slow boost build issues.
but yeah i wouldnt go that fast with skinnes on, roll racing is a way different ball game.

Good runs.
News flash to the nay sayers:
79whp advantage can go away real quick when your talking weight and traction. Its not OPs fault he picked a lighter car and saved some of that engine mod money for TIRES too (wow what a thought!).
But once again we have the shoulda, coulda, woulda crowd wanting a remote control "on paper" race forgetting that driver and what driver does with his mod money other than throw massive HP at street tires is what makes the race. Welcome to the streets people. Spend wisely and drive correctly or get yanked up by stuff thats "not supposed to win on paper".

Don't care what anyone says over the traction issues the Ws6 did a really nice job showing up the maggie over and over again. The car sounded really healthy. Just goes to prove in the real world light to light.. the dyno queens from magnacharger can't always hold their own against a good head and cam engine with some work.

You guys might not have to wait much longer on the head/cam project...Think that's in the works. The SS got DR's on the rear and picked up 40HP with a CAI, so I'm pretty sure he's got me beat on a high end roll. Maybe I'll still pull off a win from a dig.... Rematch anyone???
