Drag Racing Results - TEXAS SPEED New NA Stock Bottom-End Heads/Cam Record with 9.66!!!

Again, we made the long haul to Memphis for the LSX Shootout at Memphis Motorsports Park. We brought our naturally aspirated '98 Camaro with a stock 346c.i. short-block with heads/cam that held the previous heads/cam record of 9.82 @ 134 mph. The car was essentially unchanged other than the addition of a MadMan torque arm and manual rack. The motor received a new set of the NEW PRC 227cc small chamber aftermarket casting cylinder heads as well as a TSP prototype "MS-5" camshaft. After testing a couple different intake options we opted to go back with the ported FAST intake we ran to set the record in 2008.
The first pass on the car since last year and on the new setup went a 9.72 @ 134.8 mph with a 1.300 short time. The car was a little soft to the 60 ft compared to last year so we were hoping for better times to come. Saturday morning turned out to be our best pass of the weekend with no changes to the car. We ended up going 9.66 @ 131 mph again going 1.307 to the 60 ft mark. Unfortunately the wind was pretty crazy so the mph was down on that pass, but it picked the mph back up when the wind died down. Saturday night's pass went 136 mph but netted a slower ET with a 9.72 after peddling the car. With one shot left Sunday morning since we were figuring on breaking out of our index, we loosened the front end up trying to make the car leave better. The car ended up leaving with the front end up similar to last year. Jason had to lift for a split second to come down again. It ended up with a 9.75 @ 136 mph with a 1.45 60ft tripping the beams with the back tires! We were hoping for a high 9.5x pass but it wasn't meant to be for the time being. We'll probably have to head to Houston when the weather here in TX cools off for that kind of number.
All in all, it was a successful trip. Tuesday night it didn't look like we were even going to make the race since Trevor wasn't going to go due to a death in the family. Jason stepped up and drove the 14 hours there, drove the car, and drove back! As always, it was good to see old friends and meet new ones. Big thanks to Madman for helping dial the suspension in again. I hope to have pics from the race posted up later tonight or tomorrow sometime.
Feel free to post up and thoughts, questions, concerns...
Thanks!

Somehow I knew we were gonna go there . . . . . Congrats to you guys at Texas Speed I made a run at it on Monday but came up just short of your OLD record LOL. Is this a pump gas motor?

Congrats guys. I to am wondering the race weight. The 1.30 60' is killer. That's were it is at!

Thanks guys! I'm trying to get the pics uploaded shortly. We didn't get any vids of the car this year.
The car actually weighs closer to 2900 lbs this year with Jason driving. Car was 2860 last year with Trevor in the seat. We never rescaled the car for Jason.
It doesn't have a glide it actually has TH200 with a 5900 Stall.
We do run race gas in the car. It isn't a pump gas motor.

Big Time CONGRATS TEXAS SPEED.Shows what a stock cube motor can do.
What rpm are you shifting at?
Is the MS 5 a solid roller cam?
Thanks

JFM, I think he was shifting it by 7200 and it crossed the traps at 7100. I regeared it after last years race (I think) to 4.10's from 4.30's.
This was the last pass of the weekend:

It pisses me off so bad I didn't get to see it run (one of the main reasons I went) and sucks also that I didn't get to check the setup a little bit longer.
For anyone curious this does not look as hacked up / gutted as a lot of cars I see at a much heavier race weight.
Congrats TSP!

Yes tho the fact it probably has a good rod bolt in it and notched pistons will get some around here burnt up over the "stock bottom end" claim. Personally I could care less 346 inches GM piston, rod, crank 9.66 enough said.

why would notched pistons have anything negative towards a stock bottom end? and who has said there are aftermarket rod bolts. there maybe, buti havent seen it posted.
as for pump gas vs race gas - again, who cares. if you mill down a set of 5.3L heads and a thin gasket, you could definately run into issues with higher compression.

I'm pretty sure when I talked to him at the shootout he said it had aftermarket rod bolts...I could be wrong but Im pretty sure. I couldn't care less though, rod bolts don't make it not "stock bottom end"

OoOoh wait until the stock bottom end police pay this thread a visit. There are members here that adhere to the strict letters of the law I obviously could give a shit about flycuts and rodbolts as well but I am biased because I have done those to both my LS series motors. It was for this reason my signature has things spelled out a bit more.

Wrap a big blanket around the motor and tie it tight!
As for RWHP that car should be in the 520 range with those DA's.

I want more info on those PRC 227 small bore heads as they're not on the website yet. Alot of 383 guys probably would like to get those. And that MS-5 should be interesting too, I doubt it will be a solid roller though because a fast intake probably wouldnt feed it.

How would you get a stock 346ci shortblock to 14-15:1 compression with a .040" head gasket and ~52cc combustion chamber and "who knows" what size flycut valve reliefs? (2-3cc?) It comes out to ~12.5:1 everytime I figure it.
Fuel comparisons make way less of a difference than running in really good mineshaft air. I would rather have pump gas and -1800 ft DA, than "race gas" and -250 ft DA.

Since this is a record holder, what class does it run in?

I doubt we will be releasing the exact specs on the cam. This cam is just a prototype.
