GM Performance Parts LSX Shootout - TEXAS SPEED New NA Stock Bottom-End Heads/Cam Record with 9.66!!!

Again, we made the long haul to Memphis for the LSX Shootout at Memphis Motorsports Park. We brought our naturally aspirated '98 Camaro with a stock 346c.i. short-block with heads/cam that held the previous heads/cam record of 9.82 @ 134 mph. The car was essentially unchanged other than the addition of a MadMan torque arm and manual rack. The motor received a new set of the NEW PRC 227cc small chamber aftermarket casting cylinder heads as well as a TSP prototype "MS-5" camshaft. After testing a couple different intake options we opted to go back with the ported FAST intake we ran to set the record in 2008.

The first pass on the car since last year and on the new setup went a 9.72 @ 134.8 mph with a 1.300 short time. The car was a little soft to the 60 ft compared to last year so we were hoping for better times to come. Saturday morning turned out to be our best pass of the weekend with no changes to the car. We ended up going 9.66 @ 131 mph again going 1.307 to the 60 ft mark. Unfortunately the wind was pretty crazy so the mph was down on that pass, but it picked the mph back up when the wind died down. Saturday night's pass went 136 mph but netted a slower ET with a 9.72 after peddling the car. With one shot left Sunday morning since we were figuring on breaking out of our index, we loosened the front end up trying to make the car leave better. The car ended up leaving with the front end up similar to last year. Jason had to lift for a split second to come down again. It ended up with a 9.75 @ 136 mph with a 1.45 60ft tripping the beams with the back tires! We were hoping for a high 9.5x pass but it wasn't meant to be for the time being. We'll probably have to head to Houston when the weather here in TX cools off for that kind of number.

All in all, it was a successful trip. Tuesday night it didn't look like we were even going to make the race since Trevor wasn't going to go due to a death in the family. Jason stepped up and drove the 14 hours there, drove the car, and drove back! As always, it was good to see old friends and meet new ones. Big thanks to Madman for helping dial the suspension in again. I hope to have pics from the race posted up later tonight or tomorrow sometime.

Feel free to post up and thoughts, questions, concerns...

Thanks!

IIRC from last year the race weight was in the 2800's. The car is definitely on the lean side for a late model f-body.

I missed the run, i saw just about all the other runs you guys made. Sounds like this new cam is doing great.

I'm guessing the car is just under 2900. I believe we were at 2860 last year with Trevor driving. This year Jason had to drive so I'm guessing we were closer to 2900. The car really doesn't have much cutting to it at all. Most of it is light weight components. Several of the guys that came by were suprised at how little was cut out of the car.

How would that heads and cam set up work out on a carbed setup?

I believe a tad over 7000, and I think Jason said it was crossing the traps at 7100. Almost forgot about the gear swap, last year we crossed at close to 7500! If I'm thinking right, we went from 4.30's to 4.10's at some point between races.

Posted this in the other thread as well..

People that see the car in person would be shocked of how much it DIDN'T look like a gutted tin can.. It is definite it is a "race car", but I know of a lot more cars that look a lot more gutted and still weigh a lot more! A lot of "a lots"..

Congrats!!!! Wish I could have seen it, guess we got their too late.. What time did the run take place on Saturday?

One pass close to 9am, and one close to 9pm on Sat.

I'll see if I have some older interior and engine bay pics, I have some really nice newer shots, but they are meant to be published and once I post them I can't really use them elsewhere.

Ahhh, got there about an hour too late.. :(

That would be sweet.. I would love some engine bay shots along with under the car if you have some! No need to go out of your way.. Those were the only spots I didn't get to see.

This car is seriously one of 5 favorite cars from the LSX scene, we'll try to get the article up this week.

When you say stock short block what exactly are you guys meaning?? Reason for me asking is i am building a heads cam combo as well. Is ARP rod bolts, main studs, fly cutting the pistons, machine work allowed and just run the stock rotating assembly? Or is it a 100% stock untouched shortblock. It would be great to see a few other cars like this competing. Any help with rules would be greatly appreciated thanks

It's stock with flycuts :) More competition is always welcome! We'll be headed down your way soon to bump it a couple tenths in the cool air. If your car is together by then, we should line-up :) :drive:

What is involved with flycutting? Can it be done in the car? I'm building a H&C combo like this but I'm using a carb.
