Generation IV Internal Engine - Differences in LS2,LS3,LQ4,LQ9 and L92

Can anyone explain what the differences are and which would be the best plateform to start with. Meaning, if one has forged internals and I can get anyone of them around the same prices, maybe that is the one to go with. Or maybe there is more benifit going with X because of the bore size and head options available.

This is going in a 72 Camaro using a carb, but I just want to find out if it is worth paying extra for a L92, when a LQ4 can do the same for less.

Hope this is clear, thanks for the info.

the biggest thing about starting with an L92/LS3 is you start with better heads, the extra displacement, and an aluminum block. any of those motor can make great power though. How much power are you shooting for? It seems like the L92 and LS3 are just a stones throw away from 500 + HP

LS2 = aluminum 6.0L
LS3 = aluminum 6.2L bigger, better heads
L92 = alumimum 6.2L truck engine
LQ4 = iron block 6.0L truck engine
LQ9 = iron block 6.0L truck engine, high compression

Don't people usually put ported l92 heads on the ls3? Which heads are better? Ls3 or l92

Ls3 heads have lighter valves. Otherwise i believe they are exactly the same.

the main differences between those motors is the heads (L92 heads are the more desirable). With the exception of the L92/LY6; which also utilize Variable Valve Timing.... also very desirable :)

my vote for ls2, alot of people have thrown just about anything u can think of at them and they are still standing..just my two cents..

Are the LS3/L92 blocks any stronger than the LS2 block?

Jumping in here; If I get LY6; I am buying a 6.0 L Iron Block and L92 Heads?

Is this a VVT motor and is it convertable to std roller cam?

Thanks
James

not all ly6 were equipped with vvt. and yes conversion to conventional ls2 type cam is possible.

Yes. The L92 was beefed up for its service in trucks, not sure if the LS3 got the same treatment, but I have READ that the LS3 block is superior in strength to the LS2, someone else can confirm this though...

Excellent LS3 info page.

Supposedly the LS3 block is REALLY strong, considering its aluminum.
