So the other day i was cruisin up the freeway on a long drive lookin for some fun, then out of nowhere i see this newer silver M5 blast out from some cars and weavin in and out so of course i give chase haha. He sees me following and drops down to sixty i throw it in 3rd and honk it off. both of us stay even all through 3rd just edging back and forth a foot or 2 mash 4rth same thing no one is pulling we let off at 120 and I was surprised as hell figured he didn't have the "M" button on or something haha so we ran the same race again and exact same outcome I was stoked, he threw his flashers on and we pulled off to a gas station and talk, cool guy late 30's asked me how much i was spraying haha and gave me props for hangin, he was all stock, 2007, the flappy paddle shifting bullshit so I duno how but thats how it went down haha, mods in sig

Good race!
What does your car make for power with that setup? I think PSM has raced an M5 or two, so he could give better perspective on them than me.

V10 M5 that means you raced the e60 one, what kind of power you put down? if you're around 420-450 then the result is spot on, i've raced M5s before both the E39(V8) and V10(e60) and boy they're really different, both races are from a roll(both of them know their weight would burden them from a dig) and the V10 would waffle stomp me really hard, the V8 would hang with me with me pulling on top end(around 130ish) i have a bolt ons 98 camaro.
anyway sounds like a nice race you got.

Looks like a small cam, I don't see heads, and it's listed as untuned, so I doubt it's making anything near that power. Maybe it was in the 400 hp mode? I'd think he'd be able to pull it a bit in that mode though.
OP, is your car a stick or an auto?

IIRC E60 M5 dyno around 420-440ish, so if OP makes less power than that i really don't see how op could hang with it.
and the SMGII in the M5 is amazing and precise, i've driven it and it shifted real quick. so i don't think if OP drives a stick would make any difference.
if the M5 is in the 400hp mode, OP would destroy him.

I agree with you except that we don't know what the OP's car makes or what trans. A small cam, untuned with an auto might be making 350 rwhp and the auto will hurt alot from a roll. Might make for a good race with an M5 in 400 hp mode. Just theorizing here as I really have no clue, haha.

The SS does enjoy an over 500 pound weight advantage. Besides, that BMW is good for what? High 12s around 114-115? I would hope a small cam and bolt-on LS1 could keep up with that.

the only reason an m5's quarter mile is mediocre is because of the sluggish starts since they arent designed to be launched. and that 500 pound difference means alot less once it gets movin out.
I also cant imagine the m5 being on the 400hp setting as that would not make sense if he was racing rather than seeking fuel efficiency
Whatever the case, nice kill OP

I agree with you on that, except the race was from a roll which negates the weight effect a bit. try to race an E60 M5 from a roll and you might get your ass handed to you, i've tried and it wasn't fun. the M5 gearing is really great for hwy cruise/pull.
like i mentioned before, i'm guessing OP must have make around at least 400 to keep up in hwy roll.
as far as track times i'm a member in bimmerforums and a lot of people there do low 12 STOCK.
oh and the 400hp setting don't really matter for fuel efficiency.

Low 12s? Maybe the 2 door M6, but not the M5.

rolls do not negate weight.
oh and the 400hp setting don't really matter for fuel efficiency.
if it makes less power, its obvisouly taking in less fuel and/or air, so my bet would be the efficiency would change.

i dont want to argue about that, but i've been in a situation where me = 98 ss (lighter car) vs my buddy E60 M5 and i would hang with him until 4th gear, while in a roll race he walked me hard.
you're right about that, but in real life the fuel efficiency doesn't change.

I would agree with the 400hp mode thing. I have been on the track (road coarse) with an M5 and it was turning slightly faster times. I was impressed.

So we have 2 out of how many? Taking a best case scenario, which is those 2 out of hundreds: That means the M5 in 500HP mode  is on par with a poorly driven small cam and bolt-on LS1. Why again is everyone downplaying this encounter as being in 400HP mode?

oh there's more believe me, i'm just too lazy to look it up, point is, they're capable of low 12 @ 112-117 bone stock.
i never said the M5 was in the 400hp mode, because if the M5 was running on that mode, the OP would crush it. i believe OP's story if the OP put down at LEAST 400rwhp or trap112+

haha knew this would be a bit controversial, yea im an M6, and the M5 definetly was in M mode or whatever, thats what the owner told me so i guess i believe him, I also forgot to mention that i had about 250 lbs of cargo with me, all my jack, stands tools, y pipe, luggage. I honestly thought i was guna get walked hard i dont know how i kept up but thats just how it went down, im not guna lie about it not like this is getting me popularity points or some shit haha

Do you have any track or dyno numbers on your current setup, out of curiosity?
SD_Silverbeast
10-24-2009, 11:12 PM
no dyno numbers, prolly get on that next week, when i went to the track right after i installed the cam on my street tires i ran a 8.634 @ 86.04 with a shitty 2.451 60' 1/8th i know the numbers are off compared to time but the track i went to isnt really a track, well it is but the prep is shit.
