Street Racing & Kill Stories - Cobalt Sedan SS vs Lt1 Vette.......the rematch

Hi,

I'm Troy Maclure,
you may remember me by my annoying yet interesting posts about a lil DD turbo 4-door that is only related to the vehicles of this forum by the badge on the front.

Tales of hemi whuppin, lt1 pullin, I cant believe its not butter, no vid havin action.......

the beginning:
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/street-racing-kill-stories/1184012-cobalt-sedan-ss-vs-lt1-vette.html

Anyway,

I get a knock on my door and my neighbor buddy with the A4 Lt1 Vette says, "I recently sea-foamed the sucker and gained 3/10 on my G-tech (which now runs a 14.0) and I wanna rematch with yer lil pain in the ass Cobalt."

I happily oblige. grab the keys, a hat and some purple drink and off we go.

The details:

1st run: damn FWD + 50 degrees = spiiiiiiiin. He pulls 2 cars QUICKLY. I try and NLS 2nd (no lift shift) bit its in vein as it losses boost. It takes all of 3rd (105mph) to just get even and we let off.

2nd run: this time i still spin and he jumps a car but I nail 2nd and 3rd and pull past very nasty at the top of 3rd ending with about 2 cars lead.

3rd run: I get my best launch but he still pulls a car. By top 2nd I am almost next to him and pulling a car past by 3rd. this time we go to 4th with me a good 2 cars again

Only way to imagine how it looks is imagine being behind someone in a little bit less powerful car in front of you. You both nail it, you pull over and around him as you bang a few gears. Kind of like when the camera car pulls past the 2 guys racing.....lol

I love to look over at his face as I wind out a long 3rd and pull past the deep sounding v8 with my woooooshing lil 4 door :guns:

I ask for a 30 roll and he passes

We meet back at his place and talk about plans for winter.
Him: headers, ignition, gears
Me: tune, K&N

Should be an interesting spring

He also mentioned how loud the turbo and blow off is and he can hear it over his car.
He seriously needs an exhaust!!

thanx for reading

Purple drank FTW lol great races. Im seriously considering investing in a 2 door cobalt ss/tc. I was looking on the hahn website http://www.turbosystem.com/ProjectVehicles/New_Folder/Cobalt/CobaltSS-TC.htm
for like 3 grand they had a cobalt in the low 12s. Not bad at all. Set of good tires for yours would prob do wonders

so how does the NLS work? you only have to use the clutch for first gear?

Cyris0014

you always press in the clutch when you shift, just dont let go of the gas

hugger1975

nls is:
stay in the gas and at 6k nail the clutch/gear and dont let up on the gas. u need the clutch just dont let up on the gas. it works for every gear as long as u are at WOT.

the system holds boost and revs for a quarter second and if u nail it, its a seemless gear change without boost loss. if i was capable of the 1-2 at the track recently i wulda went high 13. but the wheelhop made it lose boost and gave me a 14.3 @ 104.

and cyrus, its a damn fun little car!
and thats from a 400hp camaro owner

so when your shifting its not banging off the limiter like a ricer guy? it just stays steady 6k till you shift?

hugger1975
10-25-2009, 08:48 PM
yup :)

if u miss, it just drops boost.
and no annoying bouncing off limiter.
it just kills the power

Good kill! I'm hoping to set up a race against a stock turbocharged Cobalt in my G8. I think it should be a damn good race.

hes only gona give you a good run from a roll.
from a stop, you are going to tear him up.

and did i ever mention they brake like a mother (stock brembos)
and turn like a bimmer!

Yeah, I figured, but I really want to see how the car's stack up to each other, so I have no problem running from a roll. Based on your MPH I'd say there's a good chance that he'll pull me. Should be fun to find out :)

remember to post it!

should be a fun run.
if i was a betting man, hes going to have to nail his NLS, brake boost a bit.......and you will still edge him out.

at the beginning of this thread, you posted a link to your first race with the LT1 Vette. in that story you were just about to eat some oven fresh pizza when your neighbor demanded a race with your Cobalt. you postponed the date with the mozzarella topped goodness to run him instead

the guy who "lost you" was saying no way would he have done the same thing. in other words: hot pizza > racing an auto/vert/LT1 vette

The problem is that a lot of LT1 vettes I see are pretty worn out high mileage cars. Back when my 95 auto was still completely stock I ran a 13.5 at 103 the first day on the track in summer heat. Thats about average time for an LT1 in good running condition. The stock record is 12.98 in a 6 speed. Good run though. A win is a win. Looking forward to the next go.

I would suggest to him to start with headers, 1.6rr, tune, and gears. I'd also get it datalogged or dyno tuned to see if it needs any work.

I'm not too familiar with the Cobalts. I had one rev at me once. :D Any mods done to it? How do they respond?

^Looks like a damn nice setup you have on your vette! Any dyno or track times for it?

I haven't run into and modded turbo Cobalts, but I've seen a few online hanging with or beating mild bolt-on LS1's, so I know they respond pretty well.

his seems to be in good shape. def needs some headers and tune. seems to fall on its face at 5500.

i am stock for now but looking to get it tuned for the holidays.
should put it at about 310/340 in a 3000lb car
which will make it a bad day for any stock f-bods, GT's, etc.

and thats a bad ass vette you have there!
