i have a 83 3/4ton 350 4 speed. i was looking at complete motors from gmperformance. theyre pricey but unless you know a reputable shop to build it. i thought if im gonna pay 6K for a 383, why not pay 8k for the 502 but the issue is: can the old truck really take the 502, im not planning to race it, infact, i baby it. can the 4 speed take it? i guess the rear end is solid.

Trust me...the SM465 will take ALOT.

The 14 bolt rear will be well able to take the 502. Is it a full floater? Or semi floater? (Hub stick out from center of rear wheels? or not)

Both of those will take a LOT of abuse, my blazer has a pretty stout 383, with a 4 speed and a 14ff rear. Lets say I beat on it pretty hard, and both have taken a pounding quite nicely. :)

Either way, I'm sure you will have fun with it.

Why not check out some motors from jegs/summit? They have comparable motors to GMPP but cheaper, also check out Competition Products. They are more based towards whole-sale stuff. But they have some pretty good deals!

You wouldnt hurt anything putting the 502 in it.

Youll just need BBC accessories, headers, and motor mounts.

just to make sure im on the right track, the Muncie 465 has 4 speeds as in L-1-2-3 , right? cuz thats what i got
id appreciate it if you know a specific shop thatll build a reliable 502, i looked at the motors on jegs and summit, blueprint and trickflow both offer 383 motors that seem to be priced reasonable but again, havent read any good things about them. i know its too pricey but better safe than sorry

Yep, sm465 is a 4 speed with low.

There is an SM420 also, but it's too old to be in your truck. lol

ive got a well built big block on my truck with an SM465 and full floating 14 bolt.. never had an issue.. you might want a clutch upgrade, i went through a stock clutch in a month on the street.
