I have no pushrods installed right now, just installed the new cam.

when I spin the motor over by hand the leading edge of the chain rubs on the dampner. Is this normal?

How can it hit the dampener when the oil pump is between the chain and the dampener?

The oil pump is below the timing chain dampner, it (the dampner) is right next to the cam gear.

Sorry, you threw me with the dampener naming, it is not a dampener it is called the chain guide.

Yes, you are fine. As long as you have the guide flush to the block and the bolts are flush or below the face of the guide you can't do it wrong.
