I always used a tall filter on SBC, didn't know there is one available for LS1. I checked the lookup, and could not come up with a #. If anyone can figure this out, I'll take a six pack.
Advantages are more oil capacity, and better oil cooling.

id be worried about hitting the filter on the ground and loosing all your oil....

Im a manager at napa auto parts in central arkansas. The part number you are looking for is a "1522" napa gold. same diameter just a little longer. Its what i use.

if you cant find the WIX, buy the K&N truck filter

^the K&N filter doesn't filter worth a crap! its filtering efficiency is less than a standard puralator or fram.
if you ever have a hard time finding the number for the taller filter in any brand, look up the filter for a Northstar Cadillac

It will be the same one that fits the 6L Lxx series Chevy/GMC truck engines. I've run the long one since my car was new. It has been lowerd for a year now, no issues-I run the long Puralator. Their is also a high strength case version oil filter from AC that is used on the LS9 that will also fit our cars.

Just looked it up. Standard WIX filter for LS1 is #51042.
I also looked up filter for 02 Avalanche 5.3l and 02 Seville Northstar. Both take WIX #51522.
I printed out the specs on both, they are identical in every way except the Truck/Northstar filter is 4.526 inches long compared to 3.404 inches for the LS1 filter.
Looks like we found our critter.

If your not in the mood for the year/make/model argument with the parts guy, I crossed the WIX to these other major brands to make your shopping easier:
AC Delco #PF59
Fram #PH3675
Purolator #L25288

thats correct the WIX part number is #51522
the 5 at the start of the number just stands for oil. if you drop the 5 you have a napa part number (#1522).
As far as filter choice i have done alot of research on oil and filter's in the past years you can use what you wish but som friendly advice is never use FRAM or K&N there filtering property's are very poor. some of your top ones are WIX, MOBILE 1 and AMSOIL filters.
if anyone ever needs any help with locating parts or finding out part numbers or wants to know any info about oil or filters just hit me up.

i work at an auto parts store and i was reading info on the K&N filter and found out that its filtering efficiency is 90% or something like that. the cheapest of the cheap economy filters that purolator makes has an efficiency of 94%.
tomorrow at work i'll try to see if i can find that info on K&N again.
personally i prefer purolator's pure one filter, 99.9% efficiency and the textured grip on the outside is very convenient.

just a guess but i bet you work at advance auto parts dont ya?
there are 2 things you need to look at when deciding on a filter. first off look at the micron rating and the GPH flow rate. the higher the micron rating the the finner the particles it filters out. and you can guess about the more GPH flow rate the better. the trick is to find the best of both worlds a filter that filters out the smallest of particles and flows a decent amount of GPH.

WIX is well-known around the world for its innovative filtration products for the automotive and light truck market. WIX oil filters have a full metal base plate for superior strength at the double seal. They also feature a silicone anti-drainback valve that stays flexible in extreme temperatures. This improves oil flow and keeps oil in the filter to prevent dry starts.

I use the NAPA #1522 on three LS type engines - LM7 (5.3 truck), LS1, and a GM LSX block 427. It works great on all these. The only question I have is this: NAPA calls this their Gold Filter. Why then is the body of the filter black?:hump:

You already know the answer - it's Marketing 101. If it says "Gold" on the invoice you will pay the extra $0.50 per unit without protest.
