2010 Camaro - Stick or Auto?

Hi guys I dont post much on here but I am about to order a 2010 SS and cant decide which trans/engine to get. If the LS3 was offered in auto form then this would not be an issue. My question is to you auto guys. Do you wish that you would have gotten the standard? If so why? My real concern is the AFM DOD. I have read of a lot of people having problems with this and not having the power they should. For the guys that got custom tunes, did that correct all the shortcommings? I have always had auto v8 muscle cars because I can make them real quick for the 1320 but with this L99 I dont know if its worth it.

buy a 6spd, its a lot more fun. All my vehicles (aside from motorcycles) have been auto and going from an auto built truck to a stock LS1/T56 car is a blast
edit: and if your going to drop a ton of money on a brand new car, might as well get the biggest motor you can out of it, just my .02 :chug:

After owning a manual, I wouldn't want to go back to an auto.

My WS6 was an automatic, and honestly, I really wanted a M6.

With VVT and a high stall converter, the A6 has tons more potential to be faster. Just think about it...variable valve timing...high stall converter...tight gear spacing...it's a dream combo. In the hands of a skilled tuner, a properly cammed L99 can make tons more low and mid-range torque with the VVT advancing the cam down low, then extend the top-end by retarding the cam up high.
Ditch the AFM if you want, but the variable valve timing is a godsend.
And only the A6 combo has it.

Depends if you want to have fun and drive a stick or you want to be fast and consistent with an auto.
If you are just going to leave it stock, I'd probably go with a manual, since you will never see the benefits of an auto, if it's stock.
Tuning usually can fix the AFM problems and also putting premium gas in it.

If you ever drive or even get to ride in a high stall/cam/heads/exhaust car, you might change your mind a bit. Shifting your own gears can be fun, but sometime it gets old. And there is not a feeling in the world like a high HP car with a high stall in it.

Yes manuals are more fun but this will not be kept stock. I plan on it being more fast than fun. Its sad to say my stick shift abilities are not as good as a lot of you and i get very inconsistant times. Plus mod for mod my autos have ALWAYS been faster than standards mainly because of the higher stall TC. My main concern is the L99 with its AFM. Does anyone have or know somone who has this car? Did you get it tuned and if yes did it correct all the known problems? Like I said, If the Ls3 had ben a auto option then I would not even be contiplating this.

COMPG, you basically have the same drivetrain and you look to be tuned. How was the car after the tune? did you pick up alot of low end torque, did the inconsistant power go away, did you deactivate the AFM? I could use some help as I am giving my dealer the order form on the 4th.

True. I agree with it getting old sometimes, like sitting in slow moving traffic. I still vote manual though. :D

Not exactly the same, some big differences between the L99 and my L76. But I along with anyone else that has been tuned can tell you night and day difference before and after. Your not gonna pick up tons of power more then likely with just the tune, but drivability is improved 100%. You can actually get the power to the damn ground instead of TM eating it up/holding it back. I had my AFM turned off with the tune and got better gas mileage after the Intake, Headers and X-pipe, tune without AFM then prior. As far as the weak AFM lifters, cam the damn thing and when your in there change out the lifters at the same time as springs/retainers/pushrods. Then you don't have to worry about it at all. It seems the cam packages offered for the G8 GTs for removing AFM cost about $1400 for parts vs. $400 for just a cam.

You can go either way. To be honest, not sure if Manual users have the same Hydraulic issues as the 4th gen T-56's were concerned. The 6 speed auto certain has given some an alternative as the more gears you have the longer the car stays in the power band. In general Auto's are faster and a stalled auto is hella fun.
Dont get me wrong, I love my T-56 since I put in a Tick Perf Master and it has fixed those old issues.
In the end it is personal preference. I have been driven in a G8 with the same trans (A6) and I found it very cool. Def had a "turbo" type power band but felt like it would just pull.

i have an L76 like CompG, and like he said its a night and day difference with the tune. I still have the dod hardware but it has been deacivated in the tune for about 10k miles and im at 17-18k now but it will be removed next winter just incase

But remember, the L99 also has VVT where the L76 does not. In my opinion, variable valve timing makes the 6.2 auto combo a tuner's dream come true...especially with a big cam. Advance that sucker to boost your torque down low, then retard it to extend your rpm up high. A six speed LS3 combo won't give you this.

Stick shift is just that much more fun, gives you a challenge on the track to get consistant and its much more fun on the street. After driving manual trans cars at the dealership (mostly new mustangs) I really want one, the auto gets boring.

Get both, that's my plan. M6 for now, A6 when it's paid off.

This.
(1st: 4.027, 2nd: 2.364, 3rd: 1.532, 4th: 1.152) mix with the 3.27 rears and its good bye M6. No no, not just from a dig but from a roll too. That 6L80E isnt going to let that 40 roll BS fly anymore.
I cant wait for some L99 cars to stab a converter and de-torque manage. I so wish I had that damn 6L80E in my car.

I will never buy an automatic sports car unless it is for drag strip only use (for consistency). Stick is 1000x more fun. You feel connected to the car.

It all boils down to.. which one would you enjoy driving more? It sounds as though your not really planning to build a purpose built race car. So buy the car that you will have the most fun with.

I have decided and am going with the auto. Stock I think I would have had more fun and enjoyed the stick but i plan to take this car pretty far. I am getting Kooks headers, corsa exhaust, vararam induction (if its finally out), and a custom dyno tune right after I break the car in. A year or 2 after I will get a torque converter and matching cam and then who knows. I already ordered my 1SS RS Black on Black a couple days ago. Thanks everyone for their input. This will be my first brand new GM muscle car and im pretty excited. I dont even mind wainting 2 months as that will be enough time to save up for my first round of mods. I think with the correct combination of parts and tuning these l99 cars are going to be wicked sick. thanks again everyone.

I agree with Patrick, the A6 is the way to go. The potential is mind numbing.
