General Maintenance & Repairs - What to replace before engine swap

I just acquired a 2001 LS1 motor with a reported 60,000 miles that I plan on putting in my 240z. I'm wondering what maintenance I should do before the engine goes in. I plan on replacing the front and rear crankshaft seals. Any need to do head gaskets or oil pan seal? Anything else?

That would be a great time to rebuild your front end, if needed. I wouldn't do the head gaskets unless I saw some indication that they were bad. Same with the pan, valve covers etc.

Thanks, By front end do you mean timing chain and water pump? I agree since it is so much easier to do now. What is the normal maintenance interval for these.

No, I meant suspension. Water pump I'd probably do. Timing chain, probably not.

Oh, I see. I don't need to deal with anything other than engine and tranny since these are the only items I'm swapping into my 240z. Now the suspension on my 240 is another story. Already working on that.

forget the water pump...they last a VERY VERY long time. Personally i WOULD NOT buy a used LS1 engine unless i could drive it and hear it run. Good Luck

They do last a long time, but if it was sitting for a long period of time, the water pump seizes up and once you start engine it will begin to leak.

Horrible advice!!!!!! you got the motor out now.. do the hard stuff while its easy. spend an extra couple hundred and replace the head gaskets, valve cover etc... pull the pan and check rod bareings... its much more fun driving the car when you know what you have.
