Just had a few quick questions:

1. What paint do I use? What clearcoat do I use (if any)?

2. What is the application method? I know I have to scratch up the surface, but do I apply all of my coats of paint BEFORE clearcoat, or do 2-3 coats, then clear?

Furthermore, just as a quick reference. My engine bay is white, my coil pack brackets and strut tower brace are red. Do I go with white, red, or black?

Any help would be appreciated.

I put 2 coats of 500* primer then 2 coats of filler primer to get them real smooth. 2-3 coats of whatever color you're gonna use then 2 coats of 500* clear. Mine have been like this for 6months as a daily driver and still look just as good as the day I put them on

I painted my valve coveroilfield rails, oil brackets, coils, front cover and intake manifold all the same way. On the plastic parts(intake and coils) I used and adhesion promoter before the first coat of primer

Thanks for the tip. What is the drying time between coats, or are the instructions on the bottle?

Here ya go man: http://www.installuniversity.com/install_university/installu_pages/donations/painted_valve_covers_bh.htm
Should be all the info you need.. and follow the drytime info on the can of paint you choose. I used duplicolor 500* ceramic paint and clear coat and you've seen mine in person. Holding up fine! I would go with red or black on your setup if it were me.

Which should I do?

white valve covers/red coil pack brackets/black coils

white valve covers/red coil pack brackets/white coils

black valve covers/red coil pack brackets/white coils

black valve covers/red coil pack brackets/black coils

If I had to choose from just those options: black valve covers/red coil pack brackets/black coils

I still vote for red valve covers/red coil pack brackets/black coils

dupli-color 500* engine enamal

used striper to remove old paint (bad job), scuffed up then painted.

several coats, maybe 30min between each.

could have been smoother, but with how much is covered, decided it wasn't worth the effort.

got a few small "fisheyes" on them, not sure how. totally degreased them in the prep process.

Thanks for all the advice. I can see a lot of you are using the same color for the valve covers in regards to the engine bay. I am going to go with white valve covers for sure, red coil pack brackets, and white coils.

I'll post pictures as I go.

Thanks again.

Thanks again everyone for all of the help. I took my time and the covers came out flawlessly white. Today when the humidity drops I am going to paint the coils.

Pics to come soon!

hope that white holds up for you & doesn't start turning yellow anytime soon. I'm nearly in the same process (white engine bay) and can't decide between white or black.

can't wait to see some pics! :thumb:
