Racer's Lounge - 2010 Camaro SS test drive...anyone else disappointed?

I'm sure everyone here will bash me, but I'm trying to take an open look at what I want my next car to be. I've always been a loyal GM owner and I love the overall package the GM gave me with my Grand National and LS1 Camaro. I have no regrets about either of those cars.
Last week I test drove a 2010 2SS M6 with every intention of ordering one if I fell in love with it. I've seen these cars all over, but never driven one before. I found the seats comfortable, but not exactly a performance seat like the GTO's. The uplevel radio is awesome and the interior lighting package was beautiful. Visibility wasn't great, but coming from an F-body, I was used to that already. The shifter felt pretty good and more precise than the 4th gen's. Of course, LS3 power was plenty and it pulled hard the entire way through the RPM band.
Here's where it all went south..... The car feels like a barge, its very noticeable. I'd put it right up there with my old 1996 Impala SS....it feels that heavy. There was tons of body roll and on the highway on ramp it did not feel solid or glued to the road, I seriously doubted that it was going to stick if I pushed it. It seemed to buck front to back over transitions in the pavement, almost like its just on a really short wheelbase.
Finally, I didn't think GM could douche us any worse on cargo area and rear seat room, but they've done it. I play golf quite a bit and there's no way you'd get 2 sets of clubs in the trunk. If you happen to have a 3rd person come along, they had better be under 5' tall. Why not just make it a 2 seater instead of trying to convince people that its a useable back seat. I don't intend this to be a daily driver, but god forbid if you want use it practically once or twice.
If you have one, I'm happy for you and I hope that you love it, but there's not going to be one in my garage anytime soon. I just can't justify that kind of money for something that I'm not blown away by. I'm sure that I will have way more fun with a 2 year old C6 with hardly any miles on it for less money. It will certainly be a whole lot more bang for the buck and its even cheaper on insurance than my Z28. :engarde:

too heavy.
This is the first year that the car's been out, so give it some time. Many professional drivers have cited that the car has better handling potential. Even if GM doesn't figure it out, it won't be difficult for the aftermarket to take care of that problem.
As for the weight, it's 2009, not 1980. Safety, technology, performance and all of that jazz requires more weight. If weight's a problem get a 'Vette or a Genesis coupe for that matter...

I think there is still hope. Like you said, the look and power are both there, and I'm sure it can be made to handle at least decently if you have enough money :D. I personally haven't driven or ridden in one, but I would really like to. The Camaro definitely seems to be the retro-muscle mobile of choice right now.

Yea, The V8 Genesis is interesting but it has a weak suspension. I have heard reports that the suspension feels very unstable on rough roads and it dives and squats a lot.

I was a little disappointed with it after driving it at this years Camaro Nationals. It felt too much like driving a GTO - large and soft.

The seats are nearly identical to the GTO and G8. I've owned all three. They are barges, but the barges are running high 12s stock now in the cool weather. Don't let the heavy feel fool you, they run well.

I had the pleasure of having the 2LT (V6) for 4 days. I fell in love with every aspect of it. So I would LOVE to be able to drive an SS. The V6 took corners pretty well, had hella balls for what it was, and turned heads like crazy.
Overall, I loved it.

Youve got to get USED to the car. Yes, it feels heavier because it is but it also has far better handling than the 4th gen when comparing them stock to stock. I felt the same way when I drove the G8 GT and was like man, this car is heavy but its very smooth.
Same thing when you go from an SUV to a car. They have different driving characteristics.

He said he could afford the job AFTER his 90 day probabtion was up. He couldn't afford the car yet, and I dont know where he works but alot of coal mines and places like that guys go to work around here will lay off low payed workers right before they come off probabtion to avoid the $5 an hour raise since the field of workers is so big. My cousins husband has worked at 3 coal mines for about 2 and half months and let go, along with several other guys. I don't blame any salesman for not wasting his time with someone who says "I should be able to afford this car in the future."
EDIT: I also meant he couldnt afford it unitl after his period was up.

in a 4th gen you feel more connected with the car. the 5th has more of a smoother feel. but handles a lil better than a 4th gen with modded suspension. im sure with some suspension mods on a 5th gen that there really wont be any comparison. as for the guys complaining about trunk room. if you need more go buy a fucking truck!!

Well all the same just becasue someone does not intend to sign paperwork that day I would still think they would be willing to let you test drive it. If I were to get one I would probably end up having to special order it since I have yet to see one with everything I like yet. But am is it that bad of me to say I want to test drive one so I can see how it drives and how it feels as far as blind spots, not only that the dealer I went to had one in the back the guy would not even let me go back and look at it or sit in it. Why is sitting in it such a big deal for me? Well I am 6'8 I dont exactly fit in most cars. and actually its not a 90 day probation at work its actually through the credit union I would finance the rest of it through. Which I could do it now if I wanted but if I wait my 90 days they are willing to give me a much lower interest rate. And I actually have saved up enough for a downpayment, like I said I am waiting to get a better interest rate.
On a side note the dealership was actually inviting people down over the radio to test drive the new camaro and get free movie tickets to transformers when it was in theatres this . So whatever there issue was I will not be planning on buying from them come jan.

Ya thats BS, I would find a dealer somewhere close with better customer serivce and test drive/order one. Then when you get it go to the first dealer park in front of the door walk in tell them they lost a sale and give them the middle finger, just my.02 though.

Just got to find the right dealer. We went to look at the new Terrain and Equinox and explained that we werent ready to purchase it yet but we are just narrowing down what we want and the salesmen completely backed off and let us test drive both by ourselves. We will be going back there to make the deal when we can just because of how we were treated when we got there. The other place we went to wouldnt let us test drive either even though there was about 7 on the lot.

I could understand them not wanting to let me drive a ss becasue of my age but when the vehicle I was asking about is a the LT version you would think they would reconsider I mean hell you would think they would at least let me sit in it to see how the car fits me. But in the end when it comes down to it they just wont get a sale from me. Hell i would travel out of state to get a new car rather then buying from them.

I know of a few poeple that just kept going to different dealers untill one took them seriously and then they bought from them on the spot..... one was a C6 when they first came out and the guy was in his late 40's...... he owns multiple convenience stores/gas stations and did not dress the part, they asked him what he did and he told them he worked behined a cash register.... like the 3rd dealer let him take one out and he put in an order on the spot.
With some cars I hear dealers are making people sign intent to buy forms before they can drive it...... I remember seeing that on a G8 Firehawk on ebay.
I just avoid dealers all together and get a car a year or few years old and save the money.

He went down the street and bought all his equipment from another dealership as he finished up he asked the sales manager to call the first dealer and tell them about the 6 million dollar sale they had got from the guy they had turned away.

The new Camaro isn't a Z06 or Grand National. It's a rebirth of a discontinued vehicle. One that really never sold. I blame the DEALERS for that.
You also mentioned cost. This car was designed to go head to head with the Nisan 350 370 Z and the Mustang. Have you driven anything built to 2010 government standards you liked better? My wife likes hers. She will have it two to three years before she wants something else.

i think it looks good but gm is way too proud of it
Seriously, what the hell is this suposed to mean? Do you not like the fact that GM is marketing their newest performance car? Do you want them to spend years (probably 3+) developing the car and be ashamed of it? Please inform me on why GM shouldn't be "proud" of their 420hp low 30k car.
To the people that bitch about the weight, look at the challenger, the Camaro is a good amount lighter. The Camaro weighs more than a new mustang but the camaro also has IRS. I don't like 3800lbs either but new cars are heavy for the most part, you just have to deal with it. If you don't like the Camaro tell me why it's so much worse than a Challenger or a Mustang. If you can't come up with good reasons then you have proven that it's the best car in it's class on the market today and GM should be commended for that.
bballr4567

The car doesnt weigh so much because of IRS. Its because its HUGE. It literally dwarfs the Mustang and 4th gen. The car is just big and Im surprised it doesnt weigh more with how big it is.

why do cars weigh more?! i got the who govt standards that Myk always chimes in and tells us but how much do air bags really weigh?! compared to 30 years ago we also have composites and computer cut metal frames. my 04 saturn ion is around 2800lbs and its a FOUR door car, i think saturn was onto something with the plastic panels.
bballr4567
11-10-2009, 06:54 PM
The weight is added by wiring, more standard crap and sound deadening. Thats really it. The more electronics and computer crap the more wiring you need. IIRC the wiring harness for a 4th gen is somewhere around 100lbs and it has no where as much extra stuff that a 5th gen has.
Take a 3rd or 4th gen and slam the door and do the same to a 5th gen. Which sounds like you just set off a nuclear bomb?
Regardless, all cars are heavier as we as consumers demand more, more and more.

I like how the Challengers looks a lot, just as much as the new Camaro, but it weighs a few hundred pounds more with not as much power and worse handling, all for more money! Don't really see the logic in buying one if you want performance.
Just the way it is, cars are bigger now. More safety standards, different frame structure to match the safety standards, bigger wheels, bigger brakes, more technology, more electronics. Along with all this, they have added more bulk to the body of the car. So really, only packing on an additional 300 lbs seems pretty darn good to me. Technology and what consumers want has changed a lot in the past 10 years since the last f-body design came out. GM was not trying to make a state of the art sports car, they were trying to make a strong competitor for the Mustang.

More weight you simply will need to add more power.. That's what mods are for right???..
Unless you want a light weight ricer car or a tight fitting used Vette, what else are you going to get that is roomy and performs better then the big heavy new Camaro's and that is priced in the same range?.. A new Ford GT500, Saleen, and or Cobra maybe? Or even a Viper perhaps for more money.. Those are just a few cars what comes to mind with room inside..
The Caddy CTS-V could be a good call even, those can be made too haul ass too? For comfort, price and performance that Caddy is actually hard to beat... Actually if I remember correctly those Caddy's are bank.. Scratch that idea if that's the case.

I am curious why people want the 5th gen to be the same as the 4th gen. Low options, mildly decent weight, and archaic suspension, yeah, those were the things that made the 4th gen shitty compared to some of the other cars in the world. Yes, lets build a new car with all those problems. That's a GREAT idea.

GM isn't listening to you because you are an idiot. GM is building the car for the masses. You aren't more special than anyone else in their eyes because you can throw some headers on your car. The car is built for everyone that wants looks and speed. You don't like the car, great. Shut the fuck up already.
GM built a great car and they are marketing it well. For the last 10 years there hasn't been a Camaro commercial. GM ran the ws6 one in 1998 and thats it.

Well its so dam fugly prolly gotta sneak up to the gas pump to put gas in it. It looks like a dodge nitro that someone put in a compactor, It looks like a truck, I don't see the excitement in driving it. I seen one last night, all black parked near me. If this is what GM thinks excites customers then geez they really need to get out more.
The new Fakeamaro looks alot like the caddy if you ask me. Figures they would just drop a name on a frame and call it Camaro. This car is going to end up like the SSR.
GM listen up....Camaro=young fun drivers car with some muscle that looks so sexy you can't help but want to look at it and moleste the steering wheel.
Fakeamaro you built= middle age doods car that makes no dam sense to anyone but a few.
HONESTLY if you think the new Camaro is sexy and exciting you need a freakin PACEMAKER!
The front of this car is just WRONG and the back is WRONG. It looks like AZZ!
So you are saying that the 5th gen, which is 16,000 orderes behind and hard as hell to find on a lot besides the car they want to keep, doesn't excite people and won't sell? You're a smart one.

i think it looks good but gm is way too proud of it
Yeah, smart thinking. The big reason the 4thgens didn't sell is because GM didn't market them. I think I saw 1 commercial for the 93 or 94 Camaro and one commercial for the 98 or 99 WS6. By your theory GM wasn't proud for the 4thgens at all then. GM's marketing department has sucked moose cock for decades. They're JUST NOW getting their name out there(after taking OUR $$$$).

...and what "young" driver is going to afford it? Even the one guy who wanted to test drive it couldn't afford it for another 90-days.

Have you ever seen a Pontiac Aztek? It might not be for everyone, but the Camaro does look great and perform quite well. But I do get what the OP was trying to say; some cars mask their weigh quite well, while it seems like the Camaro feels every bit like it weighs 3,900lbs.

The Beatles are long gone and SO IS THE CAMARO!
Why can't they just move on... build the car with a new name like FUGMOBILE LOL

GM moved over 8k units last month. Thats actualy sold numbers. Thats freaking huge in this economy and hybrid loving country. Itll only go higher once the job market picks back up.

Hmm I smell a troll...you have expressed your opinion multiple times. We understand that you hate the car! But you do not let a name die on a model that carries that much weight. It is a great car in almost every way, and has gotten very good reviews from almost all reviewers even those that typically bash domestics imo. Yes it weighs a lot but as others said that is to be expected with all the electronics and safety people demand from cars while still keeping the price reasonable. The styling is edgy some wont like it and you are one of them but the blatant bashing is just disrespectful and immature. So lets try to keep this to a mature discussion of the new Camaro good or bad dooooood.

The frt of that car is THE UGLIEST i've EVER seen! I'm being honest....i seriously don't get this car in anyway. To me its a mess of retro mixed with transformer toys. It is by far the most unimaginable thing i've ever seen. I don't get it, but i do think its a sign of the times.

They are ok. I messed around in two V6's at work. I don't like the interior, there isn't anything there. Like it's lacking buttons or other goodies to stare at on the dash. Plus the V6's sound like shit.
I was more impressed with the Silverado that was there, man I love that truck. Chevy's new trucks are just amazing.

i feel that someone that dislikes this car soo much must have something to prove by not showing his hate for this car once but multiple times. i can understand its not for everyone. but we heard you the first time. i have my own opinions on fourth gen f-bodies and vettes yet i will not go on and on about what pieces of dogshit they are to me. im very opinionated and really reserved about these types of threads. but when i see someone pushing the issue i cant help but to reply.

Yea I was disappointed with the 2010 Camaro I drove. It didn't rattle and squeak, it was comfortable, the shifter was in the proper position, it was quiet, it handled well and it didn't leak when it rained. Man I will just stick to fourth gens the do all the things that I expect a Camaro/Firebird to do. Seriously the car did feel heavy but it handles better than its weight suggests IMO. It does need more power but what car doesn't? I like it, my wife likes the Challenger better, thats what the holdup is with me getting one. I like the Challenger as well but the Camaro is the better car. But since it will be our weekend toy she has a voice. I all ready have two toys for me so she wants something we can cruise together in, she hates my other two. LOL!
