a couple of months ago my dad woke up to find the garage door wide open and thought maybe i forgot to shut it. i was 99% sure i did and then when it wouldn't close with the remote i knew something was up. i was able to get it working somehow and it seemed like the problem went away until today when it happened again. i didn't even open the garage door at all yesterday so i know it has nothing to do with that. i shut it and about 10 minutes later it opened up again on its own :wtf:

i think maybe it could have something to do with the remote that is sitting in my center console in my car. i took the car out for a drive with the garage door closed and came back and it was still closed. i decided to take the battery out of the remote and see what happened. it didn't open for a few hours while the battery was out. now here's my question. could a dying battery cause the garage door to open on its own? the 9V battery in the remote was dated best used by 2006. so i took the battery out and installed a fresh one and so far so good. i hope the remote isn't bad because it's a genie remote with 9 toggle switches inside. this thing predates those intelicode remotes by a good few years since i'm pretty sure the opener is the same one that was there when we bought this house in 1988.

I think i can get a replacement remote but its like $30-$40 and i don't want to spend that kind of money to find out that isn't the problem. apparently they went from a 9 dip switch to a 12 dip switch and then finally to the intellicode around 1998 so this thing is petty ancient

has anyone else had issues like this? apparently genie openers operate around 390hz or so.
