Nitrous Oxide - Piston rings for a small shot?

we are going through the motor over the winter and I was wondering about switching the rings to something more for n2o. We are spraying 100-250 shot through a plate.

The motor is a 383 with diamond pistons and eagle crank and rods. It has hasting moly rings in it now. Would it be worth switching to something differant?

It will be well worth it to change your rings the molly rings will take it for a short while but it will be short. The heat the nitrous produces will burn the moly coating off of the rings resulting in ring failure. I would recommend to change to an HTD, Xtream ring from Akerly and Childs. Scoggins stocks them they will run you about $160 and will handle all the nitrous you can throw at them. I use these rings in all of our nitrous and FI engines with much better results than any other brand.

I seen that scoggin dicky has A&C rings. I will look at them later today.

The Extreme rings at SD are $116. Not bad. What kind of gap would I need to set these up at for this kind of shot? Do they sell them in a 3.905" bore? How does that work?

use .006 per inch of bore and you will be good to go 3.900*.006=.023 on your top and i would go .025 on your second 3.9005 bore is common they should have them in stock.

why is the gap for boost different than a nitrous set-up?... i saw a build with total seal, top ring was .028 and 2nd was .020

Im not sure who set a ring gap up like that but I would never run that set up. When you run a slightly bigger gap in you second ring it helps to release the pressure in between the rings reducing the risk of lifting a ring land. I also run close to the same gap for a boosted app. as a nitrous taking in account the amount of boost or nitrous shot's.

When you run a slightly bigger gap in you second ring it helps to release the pressure in between the rings reducing the risk of lifting a ring land. I also run close to the same gap for a boosted app. as a nitrous taking in account the amount of boost or nitrous shot's.

perhaps gap choices are directly related to how far the pin is up. stroker versus none stroker.

Your ring gap is based on the heat produced on the top ring when you add things such as nitrous or boost the heat is increased requiring a larger gap for ring expiation. I can only give advise on what I have learned from my own personal experiences building engines with multiple stages of nitrous and supper chargers, or what I have read from ring manufactures. IMO that ring set up is incorrect.

The A&C Extream rings are the best value at this point. Is there a web site were I can find out more about these rings? The vendor adds do not tell much about them.

G engines, what kind of motor expierence do you have at building motors? How many years and what type of stuff do you build? Just curious..
