Drag Racing Tech - Who has broken an aluminum spool?

Alright who here has done it, I have just joined the list :bang:

I think the 10 bolt would have lasted longer, looks like I am going with a steel spool now…

This is for the people who are thinking of putting an aluminum spool in, don’t just get a steel one…

Maybe 10-15 track passes, caught tire hop once on a slick starting line, let off as soon as I could, next pass I knew it felt funny leaving the burnout box, one wheel peel on the starting line…passenger side of the spool is completely stripped out…pulled the axle at the track, (gotta love the drag brakes)

33 spline strange axles, with lightweight aluminum spool (I mean paper weight)

this is in a 12 bolt right? that sucks... I cant blame ya for trying to save some weight though.

Yea 12 bolts and aluminum spools dont mix at all, thatll learn ya! Lol
that sux my bro had his break and holy hell was he pist all that money and 2 track passes only and then kaboom. Steel it is,now.

12 bolt parts are not as durable as 9" parts.

yeah it is a 12 bolt, i had a buddy break one in a 9" too m6 car, but i already had mine installed and was hoping the a4 would be a little more kind...

do they make a chromoly spool?

the aluminum spools are really for circle track racing, The aluminum itself cant take the abuse of a hard hit that comes from launching a car at the track. Most common problem is what you have, stripped splines on the inside of the spool itself. Need to use the steel one and never have to worry about it again.

We have 1 in a red T/A that goes low 1.3 to high 1.2 60's with no issues.

I thought I just read about somone on here doing this same thing when I was looking at getting a spool, and noticed.... wow alum, that is lighter :) I htink Jt ws6 told me not to get a steel, the alum will strip in my car.

I've put 50 passes on a lightened aluminum spool in a 7.50 car with no issues. It was a mark williams piece with mark williams 40 spline axles though.

The guys I bought my car from tried it. They broke 2 and went back to the profiled steel piece.
I was going to use an alum case and spool for the Camaro, and have it as a spare for the Pro-Mod. (both run 4.10)
They said don't waste the money, so I didn't.

1.37 60fts at a different track with about the same da...was only running it out through the 1/8 mile...nhra track, no roll bar, 5 point harness, etc...was about to let her have a full 1/4 pass when it let go...i would have gotten one warning then the boot, so i had two chances to run 1/4 mile, was waiting for the air to drop more...

only got two passes in then limped home...wish the track prep was a hair better, it was hit and miss with the cold weather...:(

i know alot of people said i would be fine being an a4, oh well worth a shot...bring on that 4lb heavier steel spool...:drive:...i will have to make it up somewhere else...(cough ***cam swap***cough) :devil:

There's just some places you DO NOT want to save weight on.

I am going with a light weight 'Steel' 35-spline spool for a 9" this winter. They don't weigh much more than an aluminum one, well not enough to sacrifice the strength...

To save ~5 lbs no thanks. I'll pay the extra $100 and get the professionally lighten steel spool.
