Here's what I found

This is a GTO T56. This is the input shaft

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj294/01ssreda4/100_1506.jpg

This bearing, its rollers, and their cage are completely gone.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj294/01ssreda4/100_1505.gif

This is what was fished out of the trans, all teeth are accounted for, roller wheels, Im not sure, cage is accounted for.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj294/01ssreda4/100_1502.jpg

Where can I buy the input shaft with bearing, and the rear side bearing that disentigrated?

How do I get the race off the mainshaft?

thanks

Getting the race off can be a pain in the ass... when i rebuilt mine, i tried heating it. when that didn't work i resorted to cutting it off. When they are assembled, moisture can get caught and rust making it impossible to get off.

I have had the exact same problem with 10 bolt carrier bearings. I have fine tuned cutting them off with a Dremel. This shouldnt be so hard.........:D

The race can be removed with a bearing puller and a press. The parts you need are available from any of the sponsors on the forum. The GTO is a M12 and doesn't interchange with F-body trans parts. Just a FYI.

Mine wouldn't come off with a press...

I meant who built it then I remembered it was a SSI T56. That looks like it's Faceplated..

I guess I called the Bearing on the money..lol

"faceplated"??? And yes its an 04 gto t-56 rebuilt by Six Speeds Inc less then 5K ago.

the tranny wasn't dis-assmblied right. the input shaft should have been one of the last parts removed. i would look closely at the endplay and completely disassembly the tranny and see if that metal damaged anything else before ordering parts.

The way the Input Shaft looks..the way it's setup. Unless it's missing a big chunk, the Engagement Teeth go all the way around on a stock one. Hopefully one of the sponsors here that build them on a regular basis can post a pic up..

The GTO (and C5) units have double-cone synchros on 3-4 and 5-6, so they have steps in the gears to hold the inner cone tangs. This is not a face plated trans, just a stock double-cone syncho setup.

Ah..ok..just like the 1st and 2nd Gear on the F-body ones.

It could have been alot worse.

It might not be a bad idea to check your end play.

I tried and I tried and I tried, I cant get the damn bearing race of the mainshaft. Im considering pulling the mainshaft, disassembling it, and going after it that way. Also the 3/4 fork has turned counter-clockwise about a half an inch and wont straighten back up :eek2:. Pointers for me to get this done???

I cut this race twice, on opposite sides and the fucker still wont come. :eek2:

Personally, if it's giving you that much grief, it's probably taken some heat and might want to consider replacing the mainshaft.... Regardless, take it as karma telling you to tear apart the entire trans and inspect everything while putting it back together..

Post up a pic for the hell of it..is it the one that is on the end that goes into the back of the Input Shaft?

I wonder if a Power Steering Pulley Puller would get that Race off..

Yes thats the one, and yes I thought of this as well. Its too mutilated for that idea to work now :jest:

The bearing will come off easy with the mainshaft out.
Sorry for the sideways picture.

http://www.garagedooropeners.us/240sx/MN12/MN_12_10.JPG

You can also dremel it off carefully with a mini griding wheel and then use a chisel to break the bearing race free.

Getting that bearing back on the mainshaft correctly will be much easier with the main shaft removed from the transmission.

85MikeTPI makes a good point about disassembling the tranny and doing it correctly. You especially will want to check the endplay after replacing that bearing.

Yeha, that freakn bearing is a PIA more times than not. Mainshaft needs to come out, and gonna need a press and some heat, or a VERY GOOD bearing spreader/puller setup AND some heat.

Anytime I have replaced that bearing, it required heat to pull old one off. Period.
2 people help in this case, even though it CAn be done with 1.

One person on a "rosebud" type torch, and the other working the press.

Slow and easy is what ya want. Just enough heat to where it will allow you to move it with the press. Concentrate heat on the bearing race itself, and with the aid of teh press, it will come off eventually.

Gen414
11-21-2009, 11:31 AM
Just saw Bearcatt's pic (that is a nice bearing spreader/puller setup he has) and you need to be setup with that (if no access to a press) and a torch. I have a very good spreader/puller, and I end up using a torch as well to heat teh race. Once it is setup like the above, and with some heat, will pop right off at that point.

HA! I am glad it came off easy for you. Majority of one's I have done, have ALWAYS needed heat (with press and or puller) to get off.

That is a nice spreader you have. Hard to find...where did you get yours at Bearcatt?

You should be able to cut the race in half, take a chisel and hit the shit out of it with a hammer in the groove you cut. It works everytime for me. You must make sure to cut enough of a groove in order to crack the race when you hit.

01ssreda4
11-21-2009, 02:30 PM
I cut the race completely in half in two different spots, and when I chisel it, it mushes it up and some pieces of it crack off....:bang:

thesource
11-21-2009, 03:36 PM
How are you cutting it? I cut it at about a 45 degree angle from the rear to the front. You are going to get into the mainshaft a little bit when cutting it but its ok. Just don't cut into it real bad. You should be able to see the crack in the race after you hit it with the chisel if you did it right. If you do not cut it well enough, you won't crack the race.

Thanks Gen414,

I bought the puller at Harbor Freight.
I did get lucky with that bearing, it wasn't to bad getting it free.
That tool worked really well for me.
With that said, some of those Harbor Freight tools explode after using
them about 5 or 6 times.

I wanted to buy a good American made press but they started at $700.oo plus shipping.

I ended up getting a 12 ton press from Harbor freight pretty cheap.
It gets the job done.

This type tool wont work on this bearing as there is no lip for it to grab ahold of behind the race. There is some type of collar behind the race that is the same O.D. as the race so there is no groove for the seperator to go in.

They have different sizes.
