Hey guys, I have an Alpine 9884 head unit and am trying to get the steering wheel control to work, so I bought the Pac Swi-X. I am able to program the version number into the Pac Swi-x but cannot program any of the actual steering wheel controls to it. I have spent almost two days on this and have done plenty of searches but still have not found the answer to my problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex

You need the PAC SWI-JACK not the SWI-X.

I am not sure the Pac Swi-Jack would work since my Alpine uses an infrared remote. I'm going to mess with it some more today and hopefully get it to work..

Your CDA-9884 has a built-in hardwire remote control connection for use with a SWI-JACK and an optional IR remote capability for use with the SWI-X. The hardwired SWI-JACK is much easier to install and doesn't suffer from the shortcomings of the SWI-X (wash out in sunlight, intermittent operation) but the SWI-X should work. The programming steps can be a pain but will work if you follow them exactly.

Yeah, the SWI-JACK is a lot easier. Make sure you have the right version number programmed. You shouldn't need the extended IR setting. Also make sure you have the green wire hooked into the right pin connector. I made that mistake and mine did the same thing yours is doing. It would program the version number but would not program the buttons. Double check that connector!

Alright thanks for the advice guys, I checked all the wiring and it was all right but I still could get nothing out of it, so I pulled the pac swi-x. I guess I'll be looking around now for a pac swi-jack. Thanks guys, by the way if anyone is looking for a pac swi-x that is basically brand new let me know.

Thanks,
Alex

If you get the SWI-Jack, make sure to follow the instructions closely. They're pretty tricky if you haven't done it or don't do it very often.

My SWI-X does occasionally have a sunlight washout issue with my 9886...it's not too bad, I figure window tint will fix it, but that is a very good point you brought up.

Can you program the buttons with th JACK to do whatever you want to like with the X?

The SWI-JACK and the SWI-X are basically the same device except for how they communicate with the head unit. The same programming options are available on both of them.
