Escort 8500 or the Valentine One are the only two I would use. I own a 8500 works great I have many friends with them and they all love them. Cobra radar dectors are cheap and not nearly as affective.

I got mine on EBAY a while back, brand new, for 270 shipped, 30 bucks less than retail, might be more now, but its worth a look. Hope that helps.

You can throw the Bel 985 in there also. It rates up there with the V1 and the escort and is the cheapest of the three at about 200-230. Sounddomain.com has the escort and I think the Bel at pretty decent prices. I don't think you can go wrong with any of these three.

I just got my passport 8500 as well off of Ebay real cheap. like $220.00/brand new.
I read alot of reviews and the passport came in first over Valentine. Reviews were saying that the Valentine gave out more false alarms in the city. the passport did not.
Good luck 2 ya.

I just got my Passport 8500 and love it. There is a kit call the ZR Shifter you can add to the 8500 and make your car or truck undetectable. I believe it cost 375 bucks extra. The 8500 alone is a great detector, but for the extra advantage you could through on the ZR Shifter and have an awesome setup.

Undetectable? Its not a stealth bomber. :jest:

The ZR3 shifter is a laser tranciever. What it does is it has 2 sensors in the front one in the rear they take in a Laser signal and shoot out a bogus signal back to the cops radar gun. This does not mean you can keep speeding when the laser detection goes off you should slow down to a resonable speed. Even the directions for the ZR3 recommend this. It in no way affects your radar dectors abilities to jam, interfere, or dectect better any standard X, K, or KA frequencies. The laser jammer is legal because Lasers are mandated by the FDA which has no restrictions on such products. Radar jammers are illegal because they are mandated by the FCC.

i actually have a ZR3, but have yet to install it on my car, but for the 8500, it is amazing, you get great range, and not too many false signals. plus the smart cord makes turning that annoying sound down.... and put a direct wire kit in there, and it is completely stealth

(i have my detector behind the rear view mirror, just a tad below, and have the hard wire kit ran up with the rear view mirror light wires, throw the hood liner, down the a-pillar right into the fuse box, and i have the smart cord part in the ashtray in the center console, stealty and functional)

Well I guess I missunderstood the sales man talking about the ZR Shifter attachement, and any reasonable person would slow down when their radar goes off. Cops can still pace you and give tickets. From what they had told me it wasn't just Laser that was being jammed it was the whole band. Anyway I guess I have to watch what these store sales men say; it was a little hard to believe when he was explaining the whole setup to us. I wonder if it's even worth it just for a laser jammer? So far the 8500 has really proven itself and I am very satisfied with the product.

Yea the guy was lying to you about jamming radar frequencies. Im a dealer of Escort so I know a few things about them.

Is it true that any authorized dealer for Escort has to sell the Passport 8500 for $299 no higher and no lower. The sales guy told us that he and no other dealer for Escort could alter the price?
This sounded really strange. So I left and bought mine at a Best Buy.

no, its not completely un-true, you can sell it between 279.99-and 319.99, i dont know if this is true for everyone, but thats what we were told

That is why they do not allow their detectors sold on ebay. They don't like their prices lower that what they want them sold at. I bought mine for $220.00 with 2nd day fed-ex from Ebay. Save me some $$$$.

Well I guess he didn't try to jive me on everything then.
Thanks for the help..

Valentine1. Period. Go to all their home pages, and consumer reviews. You'll know why. Laters.

not to hijack, but what are the good built in ones? i bought my car used, and it had a built in one but the previous owner took it out. i would like to put it back in since it has the holes or whatever...and the v1 rocks, i have a cobra bought just bought that for $$ reasons. v1 is the best

Gotta vote for the Valentine1. Ordered one the day I bought the car and have been extremely happy. I always run mine in Logic mode and have very little falsing. Another big selling point for me was the fact that they will update any detector they have ever made. No need to buy a new one in five years if they come out with a new radar band.

Valentine 1. I have picked up CaliHP at 3 MILES!!! Programmable, you can turn off the x band (automatic doors) front and rear sensors, metal case, built very good. Bought mine used about 5 years ago, it finally died last month. Oh yeah it's upgradeable. Send it in new guts put in. Best detector out there.
