Posted in lounge, but maybe belongs here ?

I just got the motor back in, and running well, but then

I get real high voltage as soon as I hit the gas.... up to 18v . Verifyed by dash lights getting brighter, as well as head lights, and efi live. Fuel pump (in-line) starts to wine louder too. I just went down to end of the block and turned around, afraid I would hurt something. It will idle at 13v @800rpm, but as soon as gas is hit, it shoots right up..... What did I hook up wrong to cause this ? I have never heard of this before. This alternator worked fine last fall.

I have a ground going right to the head, and another going to the body, and a third going from the body to the block. Power goes to starter, alternator, and fuse block. I do not have any aftermarket stereo stuff. (aside from small head unit that was in last year)

Any ideas ?
Thanks, J

The internal regulator of the alternator might be screwed up.

Sell it on Ebay as a HI-Volt stereo competion alternator.

The internal regulator of the alternator might be screwed up.

Thanks for the reply's. :)

Yes, it was the internal regulator. I installed a reman delco alternator and no problems since.

I have seen MANY alternaotrs go out, but never one like this before. 'shrug'

don't people make higher voltage alternators? I was thinking it would be nice to have a 16 volt alternator to run things like the fans, fuel pump, audio stuff, etc....and then have a step down on the computer.
