The Founder of GMInsidernews and NewAgeGTO.com has written a great article on the history of the GM-80, the front wheel drive 4th Gen that almost debuted in 1989. Guy McCoy and Ted Krygier also contributed to the article.

What I find interesting is a 280hp FWD F-Body would have hit the market at the exact right time for the Import Craze. While I personally would have never bought a FWD Trans Am, I have to wonder if the F-Body wouldn't have been more of a sales success had it gone FWD in 1989.

I remember reading about that back then.
The Probe was supposed to be the Mustang replacement.

I'm glad that fwd F-bod was never produced.

It probably would have been a good car, just not a good Firebird. Just as the Probe would not have been a good Mustang.

I find it interesting that the styling is very close to a 4th gen LT1. Notice the windows have the same triangle next to the glass.
