Stereo & Electronics - Problem with Alpine speakers

My front passenger side speaker just blew and i replaced the two front speakers with Alpine sps 170s. The stock speakers have two sets of contacts and the alpines only have one set. We spliced the four wires together and just attached them to the one contact on the alpines. We attached the negatives together and the positives together and everything went fine but when I turn up the speakers to a higher level (not even that high) i get an assload of distortion and it sounds terrible. Im sure it had something to do with splicing those wires. Im not sure what to do. BTW i read the sticky about installing them and it was confusing as hell. Can someone break it down for me?

you should connect the two wires that went to the factory mid only for best results, leave the wires for the factory tweeter disconnected.
