Wait! Don't turn that page! This may look like the same Corvette that's been overexposed on newstands over the past 12 months, and it may bear familiar ZO6 badging that suggests its just the same Corvette with 10-15-percent-better performance. But this is actually GM's Dodge Viper slayer, its stealth weapon against Ford's GT supercar.

Can you wrap your mind around the concept of a factory-issued, fully warranted 200-mph Corvette that'll hit 100 mph in the low sevens and run mid or low 11s in the quarter? Okay, none of those numbers is official yet. The car is still undergoing wind-tunnel testing and final engine tuning. But sources say a prototype with full camo flapping in the high-speed breeze has driven well into the 190s, and our pocket Cray supercomputer says that at 200 mph this Vette would be spinning at or just past its power peak in fifth gear, which seems plausible.

Here's the beef backing that brag: The 7.0-liter LS7 engine will produce at least 500 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 475 pound-feet of torque at 4800 rpm. Revving just slightly past its 7000-rpm redline through base Corvette six-speed gearing, it'll hit 60 mph in first in well under four seconds. The chassis is - drum roll - all aluminum. Magnesium and carbon-fiber parts also are used to help contain the total curb weight to under 3150 pounds. That'll put the new ZO6's weight-to-power ratio below both the Ford GT's 6.3 pounds/horsepower and the Viper's 6.8. Aero tuning reduces total lift and and balances the front and rear left coefficients while increasing the base Vette's 0.28 drag coefficient to .34.

While the ZO6 broke cover in Detroit in January, we won't get a chance to drive it and verify these lofty claims until later this spring. You won't get a crack at it either until the fourth quarter of 2005, at which point we estimate the you'll have to shell out $75-$85 large. For now, let's train our magnifying glasses on this exotic Chevrolet.

Started to read... but then I don't want to waste my enjoyment when I open up each issue of MT. There's a reason I subscribe :jest:

No shit. I'm already trying to figure out how I'm going to come up with enough scratch to put one in my garage.

Holy $#!+@*&, they finally found a decent looking steering wheel.

The only thing that bugs me (despite the sheer awesomeness of this car) is the fact that GM was not able to undercut the previous car in terms of curb weight. I know I know, 100 more hp so who gives a shit about 22 lbs.

In any case, I'm anxious to see what GM is capable of with the so called Blue Devil project. Sweet mother of God, if that project gets the green light God only knows what another 100hp and a few hundred lbs. less will enable the Corvette to do in terms of performance. While the price certainly went up, I'm glad it did as it shows GM was willing to make customers pay a bit more in return for much more ballsy performance.

On a side note, I still get a kick out of reading about the 7.0L "small block" :jest: Same thing with the bored and stroked 7.0L the Saleen S7 uses. Must make the JDM guys shit their pants when they hear about "small block" V8s that displace twice, even 3 and a half times as much as their motors. Suffice to say, this is one awesome vehicle.

Guess that confirms it. 427 Power! Hopefully this will lower the prices of the C5 Z06s and I can get one sometime in the near future.

Awesome! Only thing that sucks is that it actually is $75k. I was hoping that the price was just a rumor. I wanted to see the thing for $65k tops. Oh well, I can dream about owning one I guess.

In theory the price hasn't been announced yet (and probably won't be until Spring of '05), so I would assume that the $75k number is an MT estimate. I think the base car might come in under $70k myself - especially now that they seem to have dropped (at least in this article) any mention of carbon fiber rear deck, fenders, and hood. It is also looking like the cushy stuff may be optional, which would mean you may be able to get a base vehicle for slightly less $$ and weight.

I would think the price is close, maybe +/- $5,000 - 7,000. The car has amazing technology incorporated with supercar performance...at any price in that range, it
will be a BARGAIN.

Now, how to save for one:
1) ramen noodles and water for me for the next year.
2) walk to work
3) ebay everything in my house, including pets, appliances and furniture.
4) ...or find me a SUGAR-momma!

I know tell me about it! I'm trying to save for a nice house right now. Though option 4 is quite tempting, I'll be a man whore, LOL :)

...unless you're one of those silly people who thinks you need to save for something before you buy it. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_wink.gif

And for those of you wanting a cheaper price, go back and read that power-to-weight ratio list again and factor in the price (power-to-weight-to-price ratio?). I'm plenty happy GM decided to crank these things out at all.

The price comparison makes you think wow, what a bargain. But in my head I'm thinking damnit! 75,000!

;) Sweet car. I think the C6 is incredible. Can't wait to see this one.

Congratulations , GM! You've made a world class car for an affordable price, and a brutally quick vehicle. I knew there was a reason I stayed faithful to you for all these years! Now, don't use the SS concept as the next Camaro, and I'll never leave you!

Great car, but I can't afford one. Ford for their lack of oomph in the new Stang. Ford is still producing V8 RWD cars that you and I can afford.
