View Full Version : AC Delco Batteries Blow!!!

My T/A's AC Delco battery took a dump, literally. Battery acid all over the freaking place. I was just about to slap a Optima Red Top in it and now I have to, as well as the battery cables.

I recommend every to ditch theirs if they still have one, I heard alot of bad things about these batteries and now I know it first hand.

Peace,
Craig.

me too, put in an optima, but mine was only leaking a little, so didn't change cables.

Same thing happened to me, leaking acid from the positive terminal. I also went with the Optima red top. I didn't have to change my cables either.

It's common on all sidepost batteries, including Delco. The warranty on the battery is 3/36 if original - period. If you paid cash for the battery, you get the warranty on the top (probably 6 years, prorated, battery only - no labor). You might try calling ACDelco directly and see if they will help you - don't hold your breath though. Get an Optima and be done with it. Done forget to clean, neutralize, and undercoat the acid damaged areas.

My Delco just went bad this morning. I have it on the charger now while I work from home. What Red Top should I get?

Damn, my 2001 Trans Am's original AC Delco took a dump last night. Seem's all the 01's posting have this problem right now. Mine leak acid so bad that it split the positive terminal into 2! Had to get the car towed last night and need a new battery and terminals. Couldn't believe it, never had this kind of problem with a battery....

I've had bad luck with Optima's. I use standard batteries now days with no problems at all.

make sure you clean up the acid good. i have a bit of rust under the battery from the acid i didn't clean up immediately.

I'm not sure what you guys in TX are doing to your batteries but I'm still running the stock Delco battery from '98 in my car..........Maybe it's all the summer heat you get down there that kills the battery so fast?

I had to replace the stock Delco a month ago. It had a dead cell. It did have some corrosion on the positive terminal, but it cleaned up nicely with some baking soda and water.

Delco batteries are by far the worst for leaking at the positive terminal.
I replace at least 4 a week in the summer time in customer cars.

10 years ago delco is all we would sell at the shop they were damm good. They are complete crap now. I cannot think how many we have changed in the last 8-10 years. Optimas are all we sell now if they want something cheaper they can buy em I do not want to hear the whining associated with well your battery did blah blah blah .

Is the yellow or the red top lighter? Does anyone know the weights?

im running the original delco still. i wanna relocate the battery to the trunk though over the summer so i'm probably gonna have to go optima anyway.

I found out...the red tops are the lightest. I now have one in my car. No way im having a AC/Delco in there

My Delco tooka dump as well. The paint is peeling off under the hood where the acid leaked. I went with an Optima SEALED battery. No more leaks. :)

yea, i just took my 02 t/a in to the dealer. the battery is starting to die and i only have 13500 miles on mine, no leaks. what other battery would be good. i dont need a optima or some other expensive battery, i just need it to start.

Those AC/Delco batteries are weird, as my 96 Bird went 4-1/2 years w/no problems, but my 94 Bird battery went up in 2 years............go figure!

I guess any battery will do then. I use optima cause it lasts forever, its sealed, and its light. I think my old optima was still good after almost 4 years of use.

Im just now finding humor in the title of this thread  :jest:

According to the manufactures web site (http://www.optimabatteries.com/publish/optima/americas0/en/config/product_info/automotive/starter/technical_specs.html) my red top weights 33.1 lbs. I dont know the exact weight of a stocker but im almost positive its around 40lbs

If you're running a system, such as a stealth box and components all around, I was told that I should upgrade alt and batt. I'm still using the Delco batt, but I'm pretty certain to get a optima. Should it be a red top or yellow top that'll perform best?

Firehawk526

Battery first, then alt IF required.....depends on current draw, which is determined by your system. Take the cheapest route out first IMO

Get a yellow top, they have more capacity.

Next step would be to get a cap. 1F for every 1000 watts. make the + wire as close to the amp as possible.

The last step I would take (not really needed in your application) is upgrade/new altenator.
