Can't go with eather.. I guess make your decision based on price. I have both brands and always like them both.

Why not go to a stereo store, and play with both of them, and decide for yourself

because there is no stereo store here that has the clarion...

I personally would go with the one you have seen and played with in the store. If you don't you may be disappointed in the clarion when it arrives. That being said I really like the alpine receivers but just looked at the clarion and it did have a recent price drop, though I still don't like the look of it.
Also, you know this is the time that Alpine puts out its new recievers.

Seems they didn't replace any of the higher end models like you were looking at though.
