i know a guy that has a gen V short block assembly for 800. I never thought about going with a big block but this sounded like a good deal. What all needs to be done to make this fit?

gen. V is mostly the same, kind of.
You have to have the right crank for the one piece rear main seal, but since it's a short block, that's probably not a concern. Cylinder heads are a concern though because the mk. IV and gen. V have different cooling passages and won't interchange.
The intake and everything should be the same even for the gen. V heads.
You also need to make sure everything is balanced right if the rotating assembly isn't all factory still.
If it's still unused then go for it, but if it's used then 800 bucks is a rip off and you would have better luck checking the paper.
Good luck.
