I have an '82 El camino. i bought it in minnesota, where i grew up. Its got the original 305. When i bought it, someone had previously removed the air pump and removed the catalytic converter and other misc emissions stuff. I now live in Illinois...i need to register it in this state, if i put on an aftermarket cat would it pass emissions? or is that even nessesary given age? Any help is appreciated.

*it no longer has factory rochester carb....i added edelbrock 4bbl and intake...no other emissions equipment is on it.

If you have it tuned correctly and the engine is in decent shape it should pass.
You will have to check your local laws regarding the emissions equipment. Some places don't check emissions, some check that all equipment is present, some dyno the car, some just do a sniffer test.

They done check for air pumps, only cats. They also put your car on the rollers here, so it needs to be tuned lean, but not too lean. My S10 passed with 230' duration cam and trick flow heads on the rollers, its all in the tune. Make sure you driv eit for a while and let i get nice and warmed up.
