Small Block & Big Block Chevy Specific - Wheres a good place to start ignition timing

Ok i think my ignition timing is way high in the mail order tune i got... Its calling for 34 degrees of timing. I was talking to a guy who runs vortec engines and he told me he thinks the best timing for me would be 28 degrees. Im running a vortec engine with fully ported heads and 1.6 exhaust valves, compression ratio is 9.8:1 and the cam is a lt4 hot cam (218/224). What do you guys think

Well, the vortec motors have a more efficient chamber and don't need as much, but 34 is prolly not terrible.

Start at 30, and drive it, and see how it feels.

Add 2 deg and drive again.

I did a vortec headed 383 and in the summer it was very sensitive to timing, so we ran it at 30 unless the owner put in octane boost.
