I use to have 4 of these in my trunk :eek2: These are some tough subs.
You might have them check the impedance with a volt meter to make sure the voice coil is in good condition.

Try these out if you are just looking for an underhung design.
Elemental Designs 12K.44
Find Snootch in here and ask him about this sub. Seems to be a really tough piece itself.

There is a picture on the last post. Seem to be a good SQ sub, but can hit well.
Here is Snootch's webpage.

He can answer the best since he's running 1 - 12" in his car.

Sexyvic, I kave the "old" design ED 12K.44: http://www.myonlineimages.com/Members/snootch/images/Box%20installed.jpg
http://www.myonlineimages.com/Members/snootch/images/Box%20vinyl.jpghttp://www.fbodyaudio.com/gallery/Sub-Boxhttp://www.fbodyaudio.com/gallery/Sub-Box/box_installed_1
(dual 4 ohm VC), and it is a great woofer, especially considering that they are their "lower" end of woofer. I have a RF punch 250.1 (rated for 500x1 @ 2 Ohms) powering it in a .7 cubic foot sealed box, and it quakes. Many people, even people with systems think upon listening to it, that I have a pair of 10"s back in the hatch. I really recommend these subs. However, ED did stop making this design of subwoofers with the flat nomex cone due to problems with their supplier. They have since came out with a new design that I hear is equally impressive. Here is a link to their site if you want to check them out: http://edesignaudio.com/category.php?type=subs
As far as the flat cone subs go, there are a few for sale on the "for sale" section of ED's forums here: http://www.icixsound.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=13 and one "A" series (best sub they made) on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5763499390&category=18803
From back in the day when PPI made the flat piston subs, I listened to them once, and wasn't very impressed with them, as I have also heard others say as well since then. Heres a link to a discussion on carsound's forums for some extra reading: http://www.carsound.com/UBB/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=022969
If your friend is really hung up on the flat cone look, I think Audiobahn http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies2/icon_rolleyes.gif makes or made one: http://www.btopenworld.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-Audiobahn_AWP312
Good luck on your search! :)

Didn't they and some other companies quit making the flat subs due to a lawsuit from Bob Carver or something. I'm pretty sure that's the case. Patent issue or something.

I don't think that was the case, my dad has some old (circa early 1980's) Technics loudspeakers that utilize the flat piston honeycomb design. They look just like the PPI's except the surround was inverted, and of course no logo.

Yeah I was wrong, it was the small box technology. I remember that the lawsuit could effect the auto industry. I'm guessing the small box subs.
Here.
