Wassup all,
I'm new here, and I just got a couple question. I'm planning on getting a LS1 Camaro SS. But don't know much about them... Anyways, I was just wandering is there a difference between the 98-02 SS..?? IN terms of HP, suspension, or anything on the car?? I see a 99 SS that I'm interested, but I just want to be sure that all of the 98-02 SS are the same...
Will it make any difference buying any SS?? ARE they all the same...
Thanks All...

There are differences. The '98 was an oddball year with a different PCM /harness. It was the introductory year of the LS1 equipped F-body .The '99 -'00 were basically the same and '01-'02 were the same. The '01 or '02 will be more desirable in the terms of performance as they recieved quite a few LS6 parts and better flowing exhaust manifolds. In fact, it is said to be a waste of time to buy shorty headers for those two years as performance gains (if any ) are minute and not worth the expense. Longtube headers are different story altogether. If you're looking for a cheaper car to mod the heck out of , then '98-'00 are the way to go . If you want a stock one with the best performance , '01-'02.

thanks a bunch...
so in 1/4 mile, 98-02 SS still trap the same and same 1/4 time as well??

01-02's on the whole are a little faster thanks to the LS6 intake/shorties, but you can of course get one (intake) and slap it on the 98-00 if you want. Overall they trap/time pretty much the same though.

Actually if you check out the 'sticky' threads at the top of the 'New LS1 owners and Enthusiasts' section you'll see the 98-99 where the same, and in 00 they changed alot of stuff which is basically the same in the 01 and 02's except for the fact you said which is correct that they got alot of LS6 parts. As for horsepower it was said that all 98-02 have around the same. Link is here.

You will not notice the difference at all, yea the 01 & 02 cam with a LS6 intake they also cam with a LITTLE smaller cam. If I remember right there are a few 98’s that ran 12’s bone stock!!!! If there is a average difference in HP it might be 1-2 hp at the flywheel…… other than that I think the only difference u can tell is in 98 and 99 they came with black mirrors (I think, correct me if I am wrong) and 02’ there were more options…..

I believe the '98 through '00 SSs got a better suspension. Sometime during the 2000 calendar year (I think starting with the '01 models, but not sure) they got the stock Z springs, with the only suspension difference being a larger front anti-sway bar. Unless of course, you got the 1LE package.

No performance difference b/n 99-02 SS's. 01-02 got LS6 Intakes... 99-00 had bigger cams.

98 has different PCM, which is less accepting of some programming. the coils are straight on the heads, instead of a bracket. besides that, nothing is different that you won't be changing with mods
