I am looking into buying a third gen. I was thinking of buying a 90-92 L98 with speed density, but I have a friend with a '88 LB9 Iroc that says his MAF system works great. I always thought that the Later 3rd gens were the best. Need some opinions from users, owners. :drive:

If you, or someone you know is a good tuner SD is the way to go, especially if you want to get silly with the setup. If you want a nice 3rd gen cruiser, and just plan on doing bolt ons and maybe a mild cam swap or something the MAF system is much more forgiving.

I love my 92. Generally, I would think the later, the better since potentially less wear and tear and more modern amennities like delayed wipers, modern dash layout, etc.
I wouldn't get anything older than an 88. About then is when they fixed the notorious 700R4 tranny problems. That's about the same time they came out with the 350 too instead of the 305.
Something else to think about is the looks. The 90-92s had GFX and some had spoilers. Personally I like the GFX effect so I had to have a later one.
Good luck in your quest!

91-92 are virtually identical, except 92s got the "heritage edition" stripes if you wanted. 91-92s are generally the most wanted, looks and performance being factors. By the way, InsaneClown I have a ZZ4 in my 91 Z28. Have you had any issues with headers/clearance?

If you are looking to stay close to stock and want a fun car look for a 90(last Iroc)-92 305TPI with a T-5 and the G92 package as well. Its a few mods short of the 1LE but with power windows and A/C. These cars were about the best stock performing 3rd gens of the day. Good luck

You mean with angle plugs? No. I was lucky I guess. I got the FLow tech shortie headers for $160 (non coated) that were made for 305s. Other than plug issues I dont see why a ZZ4 engine would make headers any harder to fit.

Just wondering, because my Hooker Super Competition long tubes hang REALLY low. I know that these are known to hang low on thirdgens, but I was wondering if somehow after the swap my engine sits a little lower. I know it's not likely, as a sbc is a sbc is a sbc, and the heads on a ZZ4 are just aluminum L98s. Just looking for something to blame I guess.

i have an 1983 Z28 that cam with a 305 (boat anchor) and a 700r4 (on my rd one). after the 5 liter decided to puke a rod i buil a 355 just to get by till the 383 was finished. so i can pretty much run any small/ big block carb motor with a mechanical fuel pump(what ever can be supported by a 3/8" fuel line). i have edelbrock headers that were used on the old 305 and the clearance is okay i noticed some vibration but the damn car is 22 years old so it really never concerned me any. http://pic2.picturetrail.com/VOL965/3750481/7789106/105392051.jpg
