Got a friend putting together a big block chevy. What's your estimate on power? 454 but stroked to a 427, stock oval port heads 1969 396 with 101CC chambers, domed pistons( so I would guess at least 10-1 compression), .700" lift roller cam, single plain high RPM intake. It's just bolted together- no balancing or blue printing or even degreeing the cam. Also he is using a stock fuel pump and fuel lines. I can't see this combo producing lots of power but I am not really a big block chevy guy- to me it looks like the heads will limit HP and give it areally peaky power range.

those oval ports will be good on the torque but with a cam with around .700 i'm sure it has a narrow lsa the bleed-off may kill alot of it.i'll say 550 hp.

I was thinking the high RPM stuff will make it a dog until 5,000 or so then the heads and fuel pump will choke it at about 5,500. I think he would be darn happy to make 550HP. Thanks!

things have changed- now it's going to be a 454 with a .650 lift cam and 12-1 compression and 781 heads. Block and heads were cracked on the other engine.

i don't know about the stock pump but i know a stock 3/8 fuel line will support alot more power than people think.

He is thinking he is going to make 850HP I don't have the heart to tell him the mis-matched and used components coupled with his knowledge will be lucky to make 500HP.

850 hp? doubt it, the stock pump won't come close to supporting that kind of figure. Better heads is the first place I'd look, then a decent fuel system.

Easy 550 hp, definitely 600 if he sets it up right. That 12:1 is gonna want a lot of spark and a helluva lot of octane. What do you mean by stock fuel system though. That's gonna be one of the big limitations along with the heads.

stock fuel lines and pump. I am sure he will be using a stock GM HEI. Definitly won't be set up right. How bad can you he mess it up is what I am wondering?

tell him to splurge and get a good fuel pump atleast.

I've got a 496 with a cam not much smaller than his. I kept it small for street use, although it's a solid roller. Aluminum Dart heads, Weiand intake, 950 Holley, Aeromotive fuel system...The motor is about 10.2:1.

The car made 463hp/588tq to the rear wheels on 93 octane. The cam is really holding it back, but I kept it small because I like to drive it. His compression will help make power, but have him pick a good cam and fuel system.
