i was told on another forum that running a ground all the way to teh rear of the car was good because it was one point source of a ground, is this a good idea?? i was always told that the shorter grounds, the better

No, no, no. You want your ground wires to go to the nearest convenient part of the car's chassis. Make sure you find a good spot of metel to attach it to that is free of rust, paint, or other insulating material.
Don't get confused by the engineering term "single point ground". In your car the ENTIRE chassis is that "single point ground" source. It does not mean that you should run every ground wire from every electrical device to the same bolt. Ground wires should be as short as possible (within common sense).
Running ground wires all accross your car is just asking for noise problems.
