Stereo & Electronics - Rear speaker box completed. My 1st fiberglass project.

Well, I never made a speaker box out of fiberglass before, so this was an experiment. Took a good 40 hours of labor in the end, between measuring, sanding, laying fiberglass, and painting.
One thing I noticed is that it is not as efficient as the wooden box I had previously. I can jump up and down on this fiberglass one (it's strong), but it still resonates a little and it does not produce as low of bass as the 3/4" MDF box did. Guess nothing beats MDF for low-end thump. :bang: Oh well, I spent far too much time on this to not run with it!
The up side is it looks a lot better than the wooden box did and it's still loud. :) Let me know what you think. I'm happy with it. :)

Looks good, very good fiberglass work, but the white looks out of place in a gray interior.

Thanks for the compliments. :) I picked white because the exterior is white. So's the Hurst shift knob. Ties the outside color into the inside. At least that was the idea.

unless u couldnt with that spot. you should have made a box out of mdf and fiberglassed over it and around it

Looks like the grill is just about on top of the surround.

just curious, how did u get the face to look that way, is it competely fiberglass?....... because I just used a 1" MDF as the faceplate portion and the rest was fibergalss. You should make a write up on how u did it for the do it yourselfers, great work honestly

If I do another, that's exactly what I'll do. I think the bass would be tighter. I origonally went with pure fiberglass thinking I could get a bigger volume (the current box extends through part of the rear panel.) and thus a deeper bass. In retrospect, nice dense 3/4" MDF is a better choice, even though the volume is about 1/2.
To answer other questions, the front is 100% fiberglass laid over stretched felt and smoothed with bondo. The sub is $hit....but works suprisingly well with the inclosure :jest: Also, the speaker grill comes darn close to touching the surround. Doesn't vibrate though.
Thanks again for the compliments :)

Where some good places to get the materials like resin and fiberglass chop mat from? I went to lows and no one was very helpful.
Very nice box by the way!

currently gathering stuff to build my own box just like that for a 12" W6v2.
how about a nice write-up for some fellow f-body peeps (myself included of course)?
do you know how much volume you got out of that with the extention?

Very nice!! Good job!! I made one out of plywood. A million seams and not anywhere near as nice looking as yours.

Thanks again for the compliments. :) I got Bondo fiberglass resin and fiberglass mat from Wal-Marlt of all places. Ditto for the felt material and the Bondo filler material. I will have to work on a write-up. I pretty much did it like the sticky that's at the top of the stereo section here on "how to fiberglass". I will measure and post the dimensions for the front template. Just give me a day or so.....

You might try coating the inside of the box with some spray in dynamat for better wave suppression.
For a first time you did an oustanding job
Although I personally would have matched the box to the interior.
