Stereo & Electronics - Volume Surge from my Monsoon Head Unit

Hey guys,
I am getting a volume surge out of my monsoon head unit. The unit was manufactured in 2000. The problem started last weekend (4-9-06). It seems that every 5 - 10 seconds, I get about a half second volume surge at mid and high frequencies (the bass seems to be constant but I could be missing it). I have the GM9-AUX for my Ipod but it does it while I'm playing CD's also. I haven't tried it yet with just the radio. I thought it might have something to do with the volume control because it doesn't work right. Sometimes, if I turn the knob up, the volume goes down. So, I have to adjust the volume with the steering wheel controls.
Anybody have similar problems or know what's going on here?

Not sure about the internals of the head unit. Maybe GM will publish detailed schematics (don't hold your breath).
I think you're on the right track. It sounds likely to be related to the volume control circuit. Unfortunately, it's digitally controlled. unlike the old days when you had an ordinary potentiometer in there. Back then a shot of electronics spray would fix what you described.

I have the same problem with my volume knob turn it up, and it goes down and vice versa. I had to replace my whoile unit cause when ever I put a cd in it would play for about 10 sec and the spinner mechanism that spins the cd, would stop spinning. and the radio was only 5 years old?? Even my new stock radio has the volume knob problem

I hear alot about this volume knob problem. Anybody been able to fix this? I've been trying to keep the stock look so I'd like to keep the monsoon in it (even if the monsoon wasn't in the 95's). I have a spare monsoon unit that I was going to sell but I'm going to try it and see if that fixes my problem. But then, I don't have a unit to sell anymore. If anybody has any info, I could really use it...

I can't remember since it has been so long since I had my Monsoon hu in, but does the stock hu have the thing that turns up the volume with the cars rpms and can be set to be more sensitive or turned off? I know a few cars I have had did this and I hated it. It could be related if so, but I can't remember if the Monsoon hu did this.

Yes. Speed Compensating Volume control was included in the Camaro head unit. I haven't had a problem with it in my SS as yet.

I never even thought of that? Thats kind of weird anyway. I hate all this automatic crap they put in cars these days! I'll test this sound thing with speed and see what happens. I did notice that it doesn't happen all the time but I haven't been able to figure out exactly what triggers it. I thought it seemed to happen more cold, but it worked pretty good this morning at 40°. Thats a good peice of info. Thanks. I wonder if my car has trouble with sound compensation becuase its a 95. What signal from the harness tells the monsoon how fast I'm going (or the engine is going)?

You can turn it off too. I just can't remember how since I don't use one now.

I have the volume knob prob also, but the steering wheel volume controls still work fine. I never use the headunit one now. Is there any fix for this?

I put in my spare Monsoon unit and that fixed the problem. But I'd like to fix the other one if I can figure out where to get more information about it...
