How useful are the covers for speakers in our cars (or on any speaker in general) ie the ones in the pic below:

the thing is, theyre not very tightly in place and so whenever i put the volume up i can hear the plastic buzzing with the bass, so i took them off.

do they serve any useful purpose such as keeping dust and dirt away from the speaker, or does that not matter? im thinking of making a custom piece to cover everything up but expose the speaker so is that a good idea?

I removed the screen material from the backside of the grille. It was a PITA but, no more noise.

They are mainly there to keep people from kicking them.
The speaker itself has good resistance to dust.

In my camaro they rattled when the stock 4 speaker system was in it, but now that I have an aftermarket setup, I have them crossed over at 125hz, that way theres no bass to rattle the door panels. If you have the stock system you can get some bass blockers to take the bass out of the door speakers.
