I have a 98 TA with a Cd player in the front. I would like to add a 12 disc changer to back. I have done some searches and found that the earlier cars that have tape player up front and cd changer in the back have to go with the later 01 - 02 monsoon cd player up front to still be able to have the 12 disc in the back. My question is can i simply add a 12 disc to back since i have the wiring or do i need to obtain a later head unit and the changer for this system to work?

what do you mean you have the wiring???if the stock cdchanger harness is plugged in your radio and run to the back it should work..

The wiring was preinstalled from the factory. The CD Changer Connector is underneath the rear trim panel. It should be wrapped with foam.

Yeah that's what I got I am just not sure if that was part of every cars harness or if it means a 12 disc cd player would work if i just plug it in and if so is there a specific one I need.

look on the back of your cd player and it look like a 1 inch plug if the stock harness is plugged into it the it will prolly work, not sure if you need a specific one I bought a gm aux9 so i could hook up my iPod

I think you need an FM modulator that will allow the 12 disc changer to play on an unused radio station.

You should have the wiring for the stock CD changer. But the plug that mates to the Head Unit has no place to go unless you get a cassette head unit or late '99 or newer CD head.

"The Chop Shop" is correct. All 'Birds, '94 and up, came with that CD changer wiring from the deck to the rear fender. However, the single CD head units were not capable of controlling a CD changer until mid '99 and up. The most confusing part of this, is why were the '94-'99 cars with CD players wired to the rear hatch at all?! And, what exactly does that aux port do on those head units from '94-'99?! I've heard that it might have been for an external tape player, but was there ever such a thing available?
If anyone can think of anyway to find out, I'm very curious on what the model numbers were on the headunits from late '99 thru '02. I have the GM9-Aux adapter, and had to learn the hard way that it won't work with my '97 Single CD unit.
Also, if anyone knows what the Aux port is good for on my '97 head unit, maybe it could be reverse-engineered.
Thanks!

The CD Player was used in several Pontiac's including the Grand Am. The Grand Am does have an external tape player that was installed under the headunit. GM installed the harness that included the CD Changer Plug because it is cheaper to install the same harness into all cars then to have different ones.

In addition, it makes it convenient for the dealer to be able to swap H/U's and add a changer to a vehicle already in inventory.

Id say look on ebay or the seller boards cause the h/u are expensive from the dealer

I have been keepin an eye on eBay actually for '00-'02 CD players, but from what I've read, since the units all looked the same from '94-'02, there's no way to know for sure what year they are from, and apparently the sellers take advantage of this and try to pass older models off as newer ones. I've been trying to find a list of the part numbers of the '00 and up models, but have been unsuccesful. Anyone have any thoughts, or maybe a 2000+ cd head unit that I can get a part number from? Thanks for your help.

the one I pulled out of my 00t/a has part number 09380122 on it, it's the Monsoon cdplayer w/equilizer, I would sell it but the cd spinner slows down and stops playing cd, but if you know how to fix it you can have it!

Thanks for all the input. When I took a glance on ebay all the cd players that said they where newer did not have the equilizer like mine does and has the theft lock on it. Is this an esy way to tell the difference in the later models or was that just an option. If I get a theft look unit do I just need to make sure I get the code. i would assume there would be no problems hooking it up since i assume the theft lock is only in the stereo.

no there are some that have the equilizer and others that don't its just an option, yeah make sure you get the anti-lock code or your whole radio will be disabled, but I remeber reading on here in a thread that there is a number you can call and they give you steps to reset the code or something.

That'd be awesome Rocket, if maybe we could work something out. I think I could sacrifice my cd player for an aux in. Let me know if you'd be willing to ship it. I'm in upstate NY unfortunitely, so shipping is the best we could do. If it's too much hassle for ya though, I totally understand.

well you'd still have to buy the gm-aux9 from logjam(I think thats them) too hook up anything other then the cd changer. I think it was like 60 bones but you might check it out first. If you still want it let me know.. pay for shipping and you can have it cause I was about to throw it away!!

Which side of the rear trim panel is the changer cable behind, the driver or passenger ?
Thanks

the cable is underneath the driver side wrapped up with some foam and tape, just pull the tape and foam off and plug your changer in

The cable is on the drivers side. Take off the trim and you will see it easily.

Hey "Rocket"...sorry about this, but it turns out I won't be needing the head unit. I found a cheap slave tape drive for my '97 on eBay. I'm just going to hack into the audio channels on that and take my aux9 adapter back to the store. Thanks for all your help!
