No answers??..surely someone out there has done some speaker replacements..I am replacing the head unit and getting rid of the whole monsoon system..I am looking of the best over all sound with out going to another amp and running sub wooofers..and just wondering about not even placing any speakers in the sail panels is the best way to go ... I am going to use some 6.75 3 or 4 ways in the doors and was going to either used the same speakers in the hatch or go with 6X9s 3 or 4 ways if they would fit up..any idea or experiences you could share????

Can you share a better description of what you did..and did you reinforce the speaker openings in the plastic..it seems very flimsy to me??

no problems here. but i am considering to get a second amp to power the 5x7s and the 6 1/2s i put in my doors because the headunit only puts out 18 watts rms. so right now it does not sound as loud as the stock speakers with the monsoon amp were at on the same volume setting. I have an eclipse headunit as well so no more monsoon system.

would it be possible to still run the monsoon amp?

im running alpine components in the doors and rear seat side panels off a alpine 4 channel and alpine 4in in the hatch area running off the head unit.

dont bother with speakers in the rear hatch area. a good sub will dround them out completely anyways. just my honest opinion.

My stock headunit? its sitting somewhere in my apartment. but the screen went blank on it, so im not sure if its an easy fix or not. as far as the 5x7s in the hatch being drowned out by subs, i have 2 10s sitting on the rear deck and you can still hear the 5x7s, infact there are more highs coming from the hatch than the 6 1/2s i have in the door, but i think the stereo place wired them up wrong so im going to redo all the wiring this summer. as far as using the monsoon amp, honestly i would just get rid of it, it does not put out nearly the amount of power it claims and the signals coming out of it only are the low end, so you wont hear any highs. you can try running off an aftermarket headunit, like i am right now or get a 50Wx4 amp and have them power the speakers.

6x9's ??

Is it 1989 all over again ?

even if it could be done, the resulting sound will be poor. Surely, you are wanting to do 6x9's because you remember the 6x9's you had in the rear deck of your '84 Chevy Corsica from back in the day :). The reason most coupes and sedans got decent performance from 6x9 speakers was because they were mounted to a metal deck, and played into a large trunk to give solid freeair performance.

In the fbody, you are mounting the speakers to plastic, and there is not a separate airspace for them to play into, resulting in cancellation of the bass frequencies, giving similar performance to a 5 or 4" speaker. So why not just stick with a 4" speaker back there then.

Would you use those buckets that surround the rear of the speakers if you put round 6.5-6.75 in the hatch area?? Those size speakers will fit ... I have seen a number of guys runnng them.
