Sounds like a bad microswitch. I haven't a clue whether those are replaceable. Or how much of pain they are to get to.

you can get some "contact cleaner" and spray in the microswitch. If someone spilled soda or used armor all or the like alot chances are it's a dirty switch. Spray the contact cleaner into the switch and active the switch rapidly repeadly to "clean" it and see if that works. Raido shack or an electronic parts (componet parts) store should have contact cleaner. If you cant' find it WD-40 (can of 1001+ uses) can be used as a contact cleaner and does OK job at it but doesn't evaporate nearly as fast and can cause dust and debris to collect faster than a good contact cleaner.

just FYI my volume down button didn't work, this fixed it. Then on a seperate occasion the mute button quit ... same fix ;) so good chance that it'll work. Microswitches don't go bad that often and as long as you feel or hear the little "click" it's usually good. Another cause could be cold solder joints on the solder connection. More common than bad microswitches as the heat from the summer then A/C cooling then heat causes the solder and the solder joint to expand and contract (at diffrent rates as they are diffrent metals) and this leads to hair line cracks in the solder joint which can cause a disconnect eventually
