I just installed a 396 that I built in my nova. It runs great other than there is a ticking noise that seems like its coming fom the front of the motor. But you can only hear it at idle and just above idle. Im not too sure what it could be. Ive checked the valvetrain and set the valves correctly. If anybody has any thoughts id sure appreciate it. Here are the specs in case you are wondering. 396 60 over. cast crank, trw forged pistons. comp 232s grind. comp stainless roller rockers. howards pushrods. Closed chamber 101cc heads 2.02 1.19 valves.

Does it have a new fuel pump? Sometimes a broken spring in the fuel pump will make the pushrod float and tap back int the cam lobe.

Are you running solid or hydraulic lifters?

solid lifters. The fuel pump is new but its some off brand and didnt seem too high quality. Ill check it out thanks.

Solid lifters usually take quite of bit of finess to get them perfect, then they will always need adjustments now and then to keep them correct. They will tick if they arent adjusted exactly perfect. I would go through and recheck those first.

Found out what it was. It was the timing chain nicking the bottom of the timing cover, what a joke.

I had a similar prob with my Chevelle and a 396 I built. Made a rubbing/ticking noise under the timing chain cover. Eventually went away and didn't rub through.......
